More About the Author

What in the world is a retired Navy chaplain's daughter doing writing scorching hot historical romances? Renee Bernard is applying a great education from traveling all over the world to story telling and doing her best to keep her father proud. Truthfully, her father is her number one fan, even though he has sworn never to read a single word of her books (a vow he has kept to this day!) Nothing stops him from telling everyone he knows that his daughter is now a USA Today Bestselling author or from handing out bookmarks on the golf course. Love can make even a minister do strange things!

Renee Bernard is a freelance writer and a contributor to Romantic Times Bookclub magazine. A Lady's Pleasure (Pocket Books, November 2006) was her first novel and won an award from RT for "Best First Historical Romance of 2006". She also wrote a story for the School of Heiresses anthology (Pocket Books, January 2007), which made the USA Today Bestseller List. Madame's Deception, was nominated for "Best Sensual Historical of 2007" by RT and A Rogue's Game, the final installment in the Mistress Trilogy, received 4 ½ stars and a Top Pick from RT and is available now.

Her next books, "The Jaded Gentlemen Series", are available now. The first book in the series, Revenge Wears Rubies (Berkley, March 2010) was nominated for best Sensual Historical of 2010 by RT's reviewers. Seduction Wears Sapphires (Berkley, August 2010) is out now and Ecstasy Wears Emeralds (Berkley, September 2011) will be available for pre-order soon!

Renee currently lives in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California. (Note an interesting proximity to great wineries!)

I enjoy her stories and the fact that she refers back to characters in other books makes it interesting.

Readers of historical romance are about to be delighted, because Renee Bernard has just released the latest installment of her Jaded Gentlemen series, Ecstasy Wears Emeralds. This title, the third part in the series, gives us an account of Dr. Rowan West and his struggle with a young woman who appears at his doorstep one day demanding an apprenticeship. He realizes the risks to his career and reputation that such a scenario might pose, but he fails to recognize the potential danger to his heart. Miss Gayle Renshaw, the demanding and aggressive, but quite intelligent woman at the center of the novel, has a major advantage in the knowledge she keeps of Rowan's fiancee and her mysterious disappearance. Now, with the threat of blackmail hanging over his head, Rowan has no choice but to oblige the persistent young lady. Of course, Gayle might not turn out to be as heartless as she seems initially...
...Temptation is powerful, but the will to defend and protect is even greater. With the enemies of the Jaded Gentlemen closing in on them both, Rowan must figure out how to save the woman he now loves. But saving her life might mean giving her up entirely. Find out what happens to a strange and powerful new romance in Ecstasy Wears Emeralds. Bernard, best known for her historical fiction work, invites you to join her characters in mid-nineteenth century London, the setting for this story. She possesses a strong and unique voice in her writing and she portrays well-developed female characters who tend to be distinct from the more typical women in historical fiction, especially when it comes to the romance genre. Look for Bernard's Ecstasy Wears Emeralds, available in book stores now and ideal for any avid reader of sensual romance, specifically historical romance. For anyone unfamiliar with Bernard's previous work, her stories will have appeal for anyone who enjoys fiction with elements of spicy intimacy and an intriguing sense of depth.

Ecstasy Wears Emeralds by Renee Bernard
Historical Romance -Sept. 6th, 2011
4 1/2 stars

Ecstasy Wears Emeralds is the third book in the Jaded Gentlemen series, which features six young men who escaped from the dungeons in India with jewels that bring harm to them. However, this story can be easily read by itself.

Dr. Rowan West is exhausted after a call to his patient's home. With his head pounding, he just wants to go home and rest. But instead he is confronted by the beautiful Miss Gayle Renshaw who threatens to expose his past unless he takes her as an apprentice. When Gayle continue to badger him (even though it's unheard of for a woman to become a doctor in 1859), Rowan decides to show her the error of her ways and accepts her as his apprentice. He plans to work her so hard that she will quit on her own. But, the willful and highly intelligent Gayle keeps exceeding every one of his expectations. Will Rowan finally help Gayle achieve her lifelong goal and win over Gayle's heart? When a series of murder attempts on the `Jaded Gentlemen' occurs, can Rowan keep Gayle safe?

I was genuinely surprised by how easy to read and enjoyable this book is. I really liked the medical background in this novel and all the rich historical details about Rowan and Gayle's work. It's amazing to think how far the medical field has come since those days! Rowan is also the perfect male hero, sweet, considerate and yet tough when he needs to be. I like the fact that although he disagrees with the male thinking of that time, he is realistic about Gayle's prospect in the medical field and tells her very honestly. Unfortunately, Gayle is so brash and headstrong that sometimes I feel like she didn't deserve Rowan.

Miss Gayle Renshaw is a very determined young woman. She wants to be a doctor and black mails Dr Rowan West into taking her on as his apprentice. Rowan does his best to put her off because he knows she'll never be accepted by the medical establishment. But slowly he begins to respect her commitment to her dream and recognise her talent. Meanwhile, Gayle begins to question her own knowledge of Rowan. Instead of an evil man responsible for her cousin's death, she sees him as a caring and responsible doctor. Slowly they fall in love but Gayle is determined to fulfil her dream and not be distracted by her attraction to Rowan. And Rowan gets caught up in a dangerous plot that threatens their lives. You'll have to read the book to find out if they ever over come these barriers to their love.

I really enjoyed this book - I think it is the best of the "Jaded" series. I loved the very different slant on historical romance that gave us a look into the world of medicine in early Victorian times. I enjoyed Gayle's persistent character and loved Rowan, who is a real sweetie. The love affair was emotional and sexy. So why, do you ask, have I given the book 4 stars instead of 5? The reason is that I didn't enjoy the murder aspect of the plot. To my mind, it distracted from the development of the love affair and added little to the story. Spoiler: I also felt Gayle was left up in the air....we never found out if she went on to be a doctor. I would have liked less emphasis on dastardly dealings and more time spent on the development of Gayle as a doctor and the relationship between Rowan and Gayle as she grows into the role. A great read but not quite a keeper for me.
