Book Description

June 8, 2011
Who is Dionysos? There are as many answers to this enigmatic question as there are people asking it. For a significant portion of his life H. Jeremiah Lewis (perhaps better known by his religious name Sannion) has struggled to understand the ways and nature of this elusive ancient Greek deity of wine, vegetation, madness, drama, liberation and much else besides. In the course of his study and explorations he has produced an immense body of writing which has been gathered together in this unique volume for the first time ever. In addition to learning about Dionysian history, mythology, symbolism, and methods of worship both ancient and modern, the reader will gain a first-hand glimpse of what it's like to know and love a god as strange as Dionysos. Of special interest to Dionysians and occultists, this volume sees the first publication anywhere of a new oracular system involving the myths, symbols and associations of Dionysos with a concise explanation of how to use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Reference for Modern Devotees of Dionysos July 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
Well-respected polytheist, writer, and priest of Dionysos H. Jeremiah Lewis has collected all of his writings on Dionysos in this nearly-600 page volume.

This book runs the gamut from scholarly works ('The Ivy-Covered Cross: A Comparison of Dionysos and the Judeo-Christian God") to devotional poetry ('A Garland for Dionysos on Anthesteria'), tales of spiritual insight ('Why Dionysos?') to instructional divinatory technique ('Cleansing the Doors of Perception'), personal philosophy ('A Wine-Fueled Rant') to examinations of gender and divinity ('The Queerness of Dionysos'). Through each and every poem and essay shines his unwavering devotion to the bringer of wine: "He is the God of exhuberant life, of fullness, of joy, and all that overflows its bounds."

Highly recommended for modern worshipers of Dionysos, but of considerable interest to devotees of other deities, or folks simply interested in polytheistic belief and practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book of devotion and love January 23, 2013

I'm not a Hellenist, but after reading this enormous tome about Dionysus I can see the attraction! This book is positively encyclopedic, covering the myths of Dionysus in detail, the history of devotion to the god, a good rundown of the deities and beings who surround him, and the always-popular comparisons between Dionysus and Jesus. In addition, there is a section of poetry (Sannion is a very talented poet), short stories and even a short play or two. If you're wondering about how deeply a person can delve into the cultus of a god not worshiped in centuries, this will show you.
