As an artist myself, I've appreciated Don Ed Hardy's designs whether I see them on clothing or as a tattoo themselves. He has an excellent grasp of design and drawing and making subjects visually interesting...including traditional tatttoo "subjects".

Hardy's designs have recently exploded on the fashion scene because of this and now can be seen on everything from spiral notebooks to keyrings to his more-oft-seen shirts and jeans.

However, this book takes the reader back to what made Hardy well known...not the name brand or the commercial marketing but the artist behind it all.

There is little text in the book but an abundance of pictures...most of them in color... which makes it a pleasure to flip through. He's known for his dragon paintings, and flowers and those stand out throughout the book along with other traditional tattoo subjects he's taken to fine art.

However, the photo of the book cover on this product page is a tad deceiving as it makes it appear as though this is an uber thick coffee table book of endless photos and, while the book is filled with them, it's not a thick book as it's drawn on the home page. It's just 143 pages.

Still, that said, whether tattoo lover or fine artist, there is much to visually appreciate in Hardy's book.

I love Ed Hardy's flare. This was a great book for learning a bit more about classical American tattooists. However, I was disappointed in how too few examples of his work was in the book, how short the text was, and how half of the text was not in English.

As a collector of tattoo related books n things, ya just gotta have this one. A small-dimension book, packed with the life story and ART by the well-known (for better or for worse) Ed Hardy, there is just too much beautiful, traditional tattoo artwork to NOT buy this publication. Who doesn't have Sailor Jerry stuff, or Mike Malone, or anything from Mr. Tuttle, and others? Ya gotta add this worthwhile book to your reference shelves; It will inspire you to classic greatness! I smell great... --Spider McClintock, Five-Star Tattoo Co.

Unfortunately it was not what I was looking for ... As there was no picture to view its contents, I thought it was a book with pictures of Ed Hardy's designs. But actually it is a book that seems to me, says his biography. Much of this book is ... Although the book comes with some drawings, I would not have bought if before I had access to the contents of the book. For those who like biographies is ok, but if what you are looking for tattoo designs, better to buy something else.

`Art for Life' is a short hardback book looking at the tattoo art of Ed Hardy. It begins with a brief essay about his life (which is then repeated in German and French) before going on to explore his various tattoos and other art work. For the majority of the book the art speaks for itself, but occasionally there is a brief note explaining specific details or history of the piece. Ed Hardy is very obviously inspired by Japanese tattoos, in fact he was taught at one stage by a Japanese artist, and his artwork reflects this. If you enjoy tattoo art in general then there should be something here to interest you and if you are a fan of Hardy specifically then this would required reading for you. A well presented and attractive book, that although short in length has plenty of style.

At the age of ten, Don Ed Hardy recognized the unique force of tattoo art. Growing up in the center of 1950s and early 60s California pop culture, he went on to earn an art school degree and then learned to tattoo by apprenticing himself to master artists. Over the past forty years Hardy has revolutionized this ancient tradition while also bringing fresh energy to the classical mediums of painting, printmaking and ceramics through his exhibitions in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad.

The book is not really what I expected. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I had hoped to see a lot more artwork.
& physically I expected a coffee table sized book, but it's much smaller than that. If you're looking to have examples of Ed Hardy artwork, I wouldn't recommend this book.

I am a tattoo fan/collector, and Ed Hardy was a pioneer in the art. Even if you do not have tattoos, this is a very interesting book.Great photographs and historical information on tattoing and different methods.
