Book Description

July 1, 2003
Ed's mother unexpectedly disappears, and soon another woman has moved in and persuaded his father to send Ed to live with his grandad in Shropshire. Ed soon learns of the Witch of Mitchell Fold, who, legend has it, broke a fairy's spell and was buried alive by the villagers. Ed has a supernatural encounter with the witch, and uses his newfound knowledge to confront the local gang of bullies.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This minimalist black and white graphic novel, an uncompromising and unusual story that combines the contemporary with the historical, aims for the disaffected jugular. ... In a dramatic climax the two worlds collide ... Wooing youngsters most comfortable with strong visual imagery and narrative in film, TV and computer technology. -- Guardian Education 20031021 This isn't actually a bad book. The plot is fast-paced and the black and white illustrations are great. ... If you're a school-librarian looking to add some fantasy to the bookshelves, then this is probably what you're looking for. -- SFX 20031001 Brave ... The characters are rather lyrically drawn (reflecting the strong use of poetry throughout the book) and the tones give a sense of the underlying melancholy of Ed's position ... [The book] tells the story clearly, using both the landscape and the faces of the characters to further the narrative while the positioning of the speech balloons directs the reader's eye effectively. -- School Librarian 20040304 Not all teenagers like reading, but few could resist the lure of a strong story mixing gruesome fantasy with contemporary sex, violence and teenage angst. ... Every image is vividly drawn in a masculine style with strong characterisation and lots of unusual perspectives. ... A far more challenging, haunting and poetic read than its highly illustrated format might suggest. -- The Northern Echo 20031118 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

'Thank you so much for the brilliantly entertaining Ravenwood performances you gave at Bolton Library. As booksellers we host a lot of children's author events but agreed that yours was the best we've ever seen. Stella Morris and Debe Conway, Sweetens Bookshop'

'Andrew Peters made a dramatic impact on us all when he visited. He played didgeridoo and mesmerised us with his engaging retelling of episodes within Ravenwood. He was utterly captivating and copies in the library have been flying off the shelves.' Roseanne Pugh, Headteacher, Onny CE Primary School

'This fantasy adventure has a wonderfully original setting - a mile-high treetop society in the last forest of the future. But it's a world under threat from evil outside influences who want Ravenwood's natural resources. It's humorously told at a cracking pace, exploring deeper themes of ecology, conservation and power.' The Bookseller.

'This is a powerful fantasy adventure fuelled by an eerie magic written by a dramatic storyteller. Magic, mystery and adventure are tightly fused in this thrilling and original drama. It's lyrical and thought-provoking, whilst being hugely enjoyable.'
Julia Eccleshare, Lovereading4kids

'An action-packed adventure story set in the branches of giant trees; a meticulously imagined civilisation with its own religion and myths; political treachery and intrigue; heroism, and battles to the death: all are features of Andrew Peters' new novel Ravenwood. No wonder then that it is being described as an epic.' Books For Keeps
