3.0 out of 5 stars Great bag... at first.
Initially, this was a great diaper bag. It's unisex, so my husband wouldn't feel too embarrassed lugging it around. The straps are long enough even for my husband, who's 5'10" and about 200 lbs. Initially, this was a great diaper bag. It's unisex, so my husband wouldn't feel too embarrassed lugging it around. The straps are long enough even for my husband, who's 5'10" and about 200 lbs. (If he gains any more weight, it may not fit him quite as comfortably.) The inside is roomy enough for 10 disposable diapers, a change of clothes, bib, burp cloth, extra bottle, 1-3 small toys, and a slim thermos (for warm water). It comes with a changing pad and plastic accessory/dirty-duds zippered pouch, which can be detached. Both are extremely helpful and kept in the inside pocket. The inside also has a smaller zippered pocket and 2 elastic bands that are supposed to keep bottles in place. There is a side zipper for easy access to all of this.

The outside of the bag has a mesh pocket for a bottle. (It does fit a 9 oz. Avent or any other wide-necked bottle. Just loosen the string and angle the bottle in.) There's also another pocket for a cell phone and yet another zippered pocket for accessories. That pocket also has an inside clip to keep your keys in place.

With all these features, you'd think it was a great bag. It was... for a while. Then, you notice some annoyances. Like the top won't close completely if the bag is full. Stuff will also fall out if the string isn't drawn closed enough. (It's a draw string bag.) After 6 months of use that same string is beginning to wear. Since reading one of the reviews here, I'm not sure how long the clasp will last either. And it's hard to find things in the bag when it's full. (I haven't used the side zipper 'cause I'm afraid things might fall out.) I also use the bag as a purse and am weary of the draw string top. (My friend got her wallet stolen out of a similar bag.) One more thing, something inside the bag, I think it's the string that attaches to the accessory pouch, has begun to fray leaving tons of annoying thread that gets tangled into everthing with which it comes into contact.

All in all, this bag is useful and stylish. It keeps your hands free to tend to your baby or toddler. However, I got this bag for its long-term use. My son is now 6 months, going on 7, and we've been using this bag since day 1. I'm now looking for another bag, most probably Eddie Bauer, to replace this one -- one that is zippered and compartmentalized like another reviewer suggested. I'd only recommend this bag if it's for ocassional, not daily heavy duty, use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok diaper bag...lots of room for improvement, May 14, 2002

This review is from: Eddie Bauer® Backpack Diaper Bag- Green (Baby Product)
I bought this diaper bag because I liked the idea of having a backpack style bag. I am on the go all the time and this one seemed more durable. It has been very durable, however, there are several reasons I am no long using this bag. First off, the straps are not very roomy. I have a medium build and have found that even with the straps as loose as they will go, they are still very tight against my arms. The backpack has a pocket on each side (ideally for bottles). If you use avent 9oz bottles they will not fit (I didn't think about that when I bought the bag!). The back pocket is suppose to hold the changing pad. If the bag is full it is very difficult to get the pad in and out. One feature I really did like was the side zipper. It made it very easy to get to diapers without unpacking everything. There is enough room in the back for me to pack my son up 10 diapers, 4 changes of clothes, 2 bottles and a receiving blanket. The bottle part gets a little tricky though. Overall it is a good backpack but it didn't meet my on the go needs!

When we bought this bag, we had my husband in mind. We wanted a bag that he would feel comfortable lugging around - and he does. But something that we didn't think about was ME! I love being able to put the backpack on and have BOTH hands to carry my 2-month old baby in her infant carrier and take care of her needs. I am able to fit 6 diapers (size 1), 2 change of outifts, wipe case, 2-bottle thermal case & third bottle on the outside, diaper rash ointment, extra pacifiers, other medicines, a blanket and STILL have room for more stuff! The biggest drawback to this bag is that it does not fit easily in the stroller basket. This really isn't a big deal since I like to use that for my shopping bags anyway - and usually have the backpack on my back. This is not the perfect bag, but let's face it ... there is nothing in the world that will hold all the baby stuff you need it to hold, and still be compact ! The laws of physics just can't handle that request !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great if you use disposable diapers!, June 17, 2002
This review is from: Eddie Bauer® Backpack Diaper Bag- Green (Baby Product)
I bought this diaper bag when I was about 6 months pregnant and had severe back probs. My massage therapist told me to start carrying a backpack to distribute the weight of my "stuff" more evenly on my body. So, I have now had this bag for about 8 months.

I actually love this bag! But, as my son has gotten older and we have had to add things like toys to the bag, I have found that we have outgrown it and am now searching for a new one. I really think the only reason that it no longer works for us is that we use cloth diapers which take up more than double the room of disposables.

So, if you are looking for a sturdy, roomy, unisex diaper bag and you are going to be using disposables, this is the one for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bag!!!, June 25, 2002

I bought this bag after I got tired of lugging around a bag that was way too big. I liked the backpack as my 8 month old is quite fidgety and I sometimes need both arms. I found that the bag has ample room for 2 bottles in a cooler, a change of clothes, 4 diapers, wipes and a few toys. The outside pockets are great for cell phones and snacks, while the zippered inner pocket is good for wallets and other personal items. The side zipper makes getting in and out of the bag much easier. I recommend this bag to anyone looking for a good day trip bag.

3.0 out of 5 stars didn't like as well as I thought I would, June 9, 2002

We have a 20 month old daughter and we received this at our baby shower. The clasp that tightens the bag closed broke in approx. 9 months. This was with everyday use so we replaced it with the identical bag thinking the clasp broke as a fluke. It broke on the new one sooner. Without the clasp the bag hangs open and items fall out. My husband pushed for this bag when we registered since it has a great unisex look and is lacking any of those tacky pastel baby prints so many bags have. After we realized how poorly the clasp held up and thought about how frustrating it was that everything always fell to the bottom of the bag due to the deep design, we purchased a smaller Eddie Bauer bag that closes with a zipper and we're very happy with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't even bother with this one!, April 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Eddie Bauer® Backpack Diaper Bag- Green (Baby Product)
Like a lot of other moms, I registered for this bag because I wanted something that my husband would feel comfortable carrying around, and because I didn't want to have to bother with a tote that kept slipping off my shoulder (it happens when you're 4' 11" and most totes are made for much taller people who can wear them under their arm). What a disappointment! I have so many complaints about this one, I don't even know where to start.

First of all, the pockets on the outside are so narrow that it's even uncomfortable to carry my tiny cell phone in them. I don't know what size bottles the designers tested these pockets with, but even the Avent 4 oz bottles are snug in there. Then, the pocket in the back where you can supposedly put the changing pad becomes useless once the bag is full, because it is too hard to push the pad in.

My next complaint is the drawstring design. It never pulls tightly enough to really close the bag, and the velcro closure is so flimsy that the bag rarely stays closed, especially if you have a lot of stuff in the bag.

But my biggest complaint about this useless bag is that it is impossible to achieve any illusion of organization! The inside is just one giant sack. There are some pockets on the sides, but they don't close, and things fall out all the time. Once things are in there, forget being able to find them quickly. I have twins, so I have to carry two of everything, and sometimes it is just easier to start unloading things to get to the bottom of the bag, where what I need has inevitably migrated. The inside of the bag is completely black. Genius design! It is like looking for things in the dark. I usually try to find things by touch, and when that fails, everything gets unloaded. Who has time, frankly?

I have seen better designed backpack-type diaper bags for a lot less. This backpack may look good, but it is so overpriced and so poorly designed that I don't even think you should bother with it. I was so frustrated after every outing with the boys that I ended up returning this bag.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keep Shopping! There are better ones out there!!!, June 11, 2003

This review is from: Eddie Bauer® Backpack Diaper Bag- Green (Baby Product)
My husband and I agreed on this bag but it definately wasn't a great find. I have really broad shoulders and it was hard to put on; it really didn't fit my husband at all. If I wore it on one shoulder instead of both then it would slip off very easily sometimes almost getting my son when I'd carry him in his car seat. It seems pretty durable, except the velcro wore out within the first few months we had it (we do go everywhere and our son was right along with us)! Everything I put in there ended up in more of a pile at the bottom and trying to do anything one-handed wasn't possible. Over all it's good for someone who isn't use to wearing a back pack all the time (&/or has a small frame), who is not really active or plans to not use it much, or that doesn't mind not having things organized. I ended up selling the darn thing...just to get back some of what I spent on it. Sorry it's long winded...but I hope it helps!

I thought the back pack would be the smart way to go but boy was i wrong. I feel that this back pack is to bulky. To much padded - which is unnecessary since it was holding diapers, extra clothes etc. You can only carry it as a back pack. If you are in the mall you cant even hang it over your stroller. Maybe they should add an additional strap so that you can hang it over the stroller or over your shoulder. I used this for about 3 months then went out a purchased a regular diaper bag..

I have used the traditional diaper bags and with chasing a 17 month old around (who does want to be carried) the straps kept falling off. Irrating the dickens out of me.

I like the fact that it has an inside compartment to keep my wallet safer than using the outside since pickpockets can get to the outside pocket.

The back-pak is also unisex, my husband as no problem carry it around unlike some of them out there.
