We bought the bear version of this product to help my little boy stay with us when we're out. He can now escape from the stroller easily, and he is way faster than my pregnant body can keep up with. And we want him (and the places we visit) to be safe! My husband's cousin's little boys have loved their little "backpacks," and my son was really excited to wear his. However, when we got the harness home, as I was looking at the design of the product, I realized that having the buckles in the FRONT would not work for us--my son knows how to open those kinds of buckles. He would be out of that in a flash! And many other children would be able to escape easily, too. I'm sure that there is a way to design this product with the buckles in back under the backpack so only the parent can access them! We are taking our harness back and getting one with no fasteners in front. Nice idea, but not designed too intelligently.

First of all, I love this thing. It has helped me when I am alone shopping and need to keep my son close and the seat in the basket just won't cut it. He wants DOWN and this is the only way he can get on his feet without me chasing him.

Complaints about tether placement: the position of the tether is perfect. It attaches low on the back, and there is a reason. Other backpack harnesses that are similar have the tether attachment up high. Guess what happens when your toddler turns around... the tether wraps around his throat. This harness does not do that. It is low on the toddler's back. Also, if he pulls, it won't be yanked up off of him like a shirt.

Complaints on the term "backpack": I don't think when the manufacturer's claimed it is able to convert to backpack so that you could put diapers, wipes, and a bottle in it. No, here is what they mean: There is a small pocket where the detachable tether is stored so that the child can wear it as a backpack and not a harness. Take off tether, put in pocket, zip it up, VOILA! BACKPACK! I know they say "toy or snack" and sure, you might be able to put a happy meal toy in there or a pacifier (which is what we use the pocket for), but not for schoolbooks. LOL!!

I gave this item 5 stars for cuteness, wash-ability, ease of use, design, and durability. I love it.

I have had this now for over a year and a half and my now 2 and a half year old loves it. She has used it at Disneyland, Sea World, and many other places where strollers are not possible/impractical. As soon as she sees the leash, she gets excited, knowing that she will be able to talk a walk and see things that she would not be able to see from a stroller.
I have had so many people stop me to ask where I found this (Target for me) and that they had been looking everywhere for something like this. So far, no one has made a snide comment about having my child on a leash...which I fully expected getting at least once or twice. I think of it like this...My child, on a leash, where I have control over her is a heck of a lot safer and more secure than one wandering without one. I don't have to worry about someone snatching her. Every little movement she makes transfers up the tether, so I know where and what she is doing, even if I am not looking at her. And, I have no problem with my child acting like "a wild animal" on her leash. I still enforce good behavior, which can mean holding my hand while leashed or being forced to ride in the stroller.
I'll take a leash on my kid over her getting lost or stolen, thank you very much.

First of all, I would like to start by saying that this harness is not meant to be used as a leash. Some other parents wrote in that the tail is too short or that they felt like they were neglecting their child.

We have twins who are 20 months old. This harness has been a lifesaver. We put on the harness when we go walking in the neighborhood or walking in the mall. The kids still hold onto mommy or daddy's hands, but we wear the tail on our wrists. As you know, toddlers may decide to let go and run for it without warning, and we have been able to keep them from running too far away in public. Also, when 1 adult is out with the twins, it is hard to constantly hold both hands 100% of the time. For example, when you reach into your purse to pay for something, which of your 2 hands are you using to hold the hand of each twin? We tried the Kiddopotamus safety harness which was far inferior to this product, had Velcro fasters that easily became undone as the kids were running away from us.

Initially, I did not think of purchasing a safety harness. Then, one day, as I was driving home from work, I saw a mother with a baby in a stoller and a 2-3 year old holding on to the mom. Then, when the light turned green to cross in the crosswalk, the 2-3 year old darted diagonally across the intersection. The mom left the baby stroller in the crosswalk and ran after the little kid. Thankfully, the kid and baby were fine. If the mom had had a safety harness on her toddler, I'm sure the toddler wouldn't have be able to run for a block and a half before mom caught up with her.

I have twin toddlers who never run in the same direction. We just went on vacation and the backpacks held up great. Not a really big pouch but it fit their sippy cups.
