4.0 out of 5 stars Classic comic drama, August 1, 2000
This review is from: Eddie Campbell's Bacchus, Book 1: Immortality Isn't Forever (Paperback)
"Immortality Isn't Forever" is the first volume re-presenting Eddie Campbell's classic independent comic book series "Bacchus". Campbell (known as the creator of "Alec: The King Canute Crowd", and illustrator of Alan Moore's "From Hell") explores the life of Bacchus (Dionysus), the god of revelry as he roams from bar to bar, drinking only wine, and bittersweetly reminiscing about the days when the Greek and Roman gods were in their prime. Campbell not only offers a new story - a gritty and sometimes humorous fantasy out of the 80's, but smoothly integrates re-tellings of the ancient myths, miraculously without them sounding forced or unwieldy. "Bacchus" puts perspective on Roman and Greek myths, as well as using them as source material, but is enjoyable regardless of the reader's familiarity with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie Campbell and his Treatments of the Greek Myths..., December 28, 2009
This review is from: Eddie Campbell's Bacchus, Book 1: Immortality Isn't Forever (Paperback)
... are compelling, tragic, and wise. This series is NOT for everyone, and deal with some very adult themes... but it is an oft-imitated treatment of responsible post-Olympian wonderment that is prized by true fans. The unique and unlikely testimonials of what amounts to a "post-apocalyptic" modern age of man are really delightful and interesting.
This installment introduces readers to Bacchus, Simpson, Joe Theseus, The Kid, and other memorable characters.
