Music That Fits Like A Well-Worn Catcher's Mitt,
By
This review is from: Eddie Condon: Dixieland All Stars (Audio CD)
These beautifully recorded and remastered performances from the mid-'40s chart the path of the post-war Condon/Teagarden collaboration on records. This disc is indescribably wonderful Chicago-style Dixieland jazz, the kind that they don't make anymore: genial, gritty, authentic, and un-pretentious. The high points are too many to name: Bobby Hackett's clear, ringing trumpet; Teagarden's bourbon-flavored baritone and brilliant stop-time licks; Dave Tough's drumming; Lee Wiley's
smoky, wafting vocals. Magical, unforgettable music: old-fashioned, yes, but timeless. And it makes you feel so good!

A very good performer. When he plays, he does the best he can. I am glad that this cd is available as the selections, "I've got a woman.. and "Stars fell..." provide priceless and timeless potential to be the best at Chicagoan showmanship.
Aside from the 40's recording, I would compare only, the Design record label recording, "Confidentially It's Condon",(DLP and SDLP vinyl record) )from the later 50's, a significant and compareable effort in his recordings. Let there also be a compact disc compilation with the song selections from this vinyl lp, Soon!! Thank-you.

Improvisation is King. Condon is/was the Impresario of Dixieland jazz. Decca did an excellent job on reproduction. Program 'notes'
are extensive but fine print a bit difficult for us 'olds folk'. A definite 'must' for serious "D" fans. |
