This review is from: Eddie Davis Trio (Audio CD)
I didn't know much about this Lone Hill Jazz import CD when I bought it used from an Amazon Marketplace seller, and unfortunately I still have questions that will most likely remained unanswered. What I do know is this CD contains two sessions/albums by tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis' trio featuring organist Shirley Scott (bassist George Duvivier and drummer Arthur Edgehill round out the group) from March & May 1958. These recordings pre-date his "Cookbook" volumes but I cannot tell whether these were originally made for Prestige or someone else. In fact, that is the biggest problem with this reissue label (and Gambit too!) -- they license the material but don't tell you anything about its provenance. Well at least they generally sound good, though this one is a bit muddy, particularly as pertains to the organ and bass. In all, enjoyable if not essential Lockjaw.
