5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie Fisher Live and Lively, December 28, 2005
This review is from: Eddie Fisher at the Winter Garden (Audio CD)
This album was recorded live in 1962 and it is terrific. Fisher was in great voice and coming back from not performing regularly, having devoted himself to then wife Elizabeth Taylor's career. The recording was done at the famed Winter Garden Theater, famous as the home of the legendary performer Al Jolson. Eddie does a vocal tribute to Al, as well as his patron Eddie Cantor and also several Broadway tunes. In addition there is even a Yiddish song that Eddie identifies as the first song he ever sung. His versions of Mack the Knife and Hava Nagilah are especially good.

What a voice, what power, what sweetness! I highly recommend this CD. Two notes---For some reason Eddie tries to playfully imitate Jolson lisping some words. Jolson sometimes slurred words, but I don't remember hearing him lisp. And there is a mention of Joey Adams. For those unfamiliar with the name, Adams was for more than 40 years a very popular comedian, author and raconteur.

I bought this CD some years ago and have enjoyed listening to it many times over the years and intend to keep doing the same for many more years

5.0 out of 5 stars "Live at the Winter Garden Theatre-New York City 1962 ~ Eddie Fisher", August 14, 2005
This review is from: Eddie Fisher at the Winter Garden (Audio CD)
Eddie Fisher who could belt out a song with the best of them...not bad for a kid born Edwin Jack Fisher on August 10, 1928 from Philadelphia, PA...finally a collection of tunes from my favorite singer when I was growing up in the midwest...his talent was enormous and the songs where right from the heart...Taragon Records presents "The Essential RCA Singles Collection [LIVE], also titled for Ramrod Records "Eddie Fisher at the Winter Garden" was recorded live on October 2, 1962...with the orchestra under the direction of Eddie Samuels and Colin Romoff (musical craftsmen noted for Special and Original Broadway Productions)...a total of 40 performances at the garden from October 2 - November 3, 1962 and Eddie packed them in.

The young crooner Eddie Fisher was a protégé of the famous comedian Eddie Cantor (If You Knew Susie Like I Know Susie)...during the '50s Mr. Fisher was RCA Victor's top-selling pop vocalist along with Perry Como and Elvis Presley...Eddie's signature song was "Any Time" which always opened his 15 minute TV Show called "Coke Time" (1953) and was universally the spokesman for the soft drink

This features Fisher at his sparkling best with showtune arrangements and the time on each selection:

1. Overture (2.40)

2. Don't Let It Get You Down (2.10)

3. Back In Your Own Backyard (2.06)

4. Tonight-Maria-Something's Coming (5.24) (from "West Side Story")

5. You Made Me Love You (2.07)

6. Never On Sunday (3.43) (from the film "Never On Sunday")

7. This Nearly Was Mine (2.09)

8. Mack The Knife (3.51)

9. Hava Nagilah (4.54)

10. Moon River (2.12) (Henry Mancini & Johnny Mercer)

11. Swanee-A Quarter To Nine-Liza-Sitting On Top Of The World-Toot Toot Tootsie (4.32) (Jolson Medley)

12. April Showers-Robert E.Lee (1.49) (Jolson Medley)

13. Rockabye Your Baby (3.41) (Jolson Medley)

14. Sonny Boy (3.54) (Jolson Medley)

15. Makin'Whoppee (2.34) (the Eddie Cantor signature song)

16. Anytime-I Need You Now-Wish You Were Here-Heart-Oh My Papa (7.51) (Eddie's hits)

17. What Kind Of Fool Am I? (3.36)

18. Belz (That Wonderful Girl of Mine) (4.06)

19. The Sweetest Sounds (5.24)

Fisher's voice was clear and strong, with a little extra something that grabbed you when he hit those high notes...as he firmly established his name in lights and made the world take notice...had everyone of these selections on 45's, EP's and LP's, only those of us who truly loved his work with never forget him...Eddie has two stars on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame", one for recording and the other for television...hope this release gives you some insight of what a great entertainer he was.

Total Time: 69:00 on 19 Tracks ~ Taragon Records 1054 ~ (3/09/1999)

5.0 out of 5 stars GET THIS ONE (till something better comes along), December 22, 2001
This review is from: Eddie Fisher at the Winter Garden (Audio CD)
There are two Eddie Fisher albums from DOT ("Today" and "Young And Foolish") which BEG to be released on CD. They are the very best examples of this man's magnificent talent....once he had matured enough and suffered enough to sing his BEST.

Those CD's have never been released, but in the meantime, please, buy this CLASSIC album....it was recorded live when he first returned from Rome after Liz had dumped him for Richard Burton. There are many clever references to both Taylor and Debbie Reynolds ('Love is a lovely thing, but, DON'T LET IT GET YOU DOWN!') and a touching tribute to the immortal Jolson: 'Sonny Boy,' 'Liza,' 'April Showers,' etc.

He is at his best when showing that he has 'grown up,' that he realizes "This Nearly Was Mine." He sings "What Kind Of Fool Am I' and obviously truly ponders that question....and he recognizes that "The Sweetest Sounds" he's ever heard are yet to be heard....let's hope he's heard them now, or that he may someday. He's a musical and show biz legend, a GOOD singer. Whatever his faults (and they may be many!) he is an intricate part of the 20th Century Musical History.
