Keeping standards fresh,
By Aceto "All knowledge is sorrow." (Meilhan Sur Garonne) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Eddie Lockjaw Davis Quartet (Audio CD)
The standards all have his signature sound which serves to make them spritely and fresh. "Take the A Train" is so often stylized that the greatness grows stale. Same with "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" A little bit of swing and a lot of bop. Thigpen is fine on drums.
I took away a star because the sound is not of the very best. Not to the extent that it harms the enjoyment, but be aware this is a second-rate engineering of sound. Part of that is the difficulty in capturing many live shows, and perhaps part that Storyville is not at the pinnacle of CD reissue. But do not be deterred.
