Book Description

July 20, 2004 5 and upK and up
Eddie has always done everything with his teddy, so when he has to go to school without Teddy he is very upset. But there is so much to do there, that he is soon fine. Teddy, however, is also upset and nothing that Mom does will cheer him up. They were both very relieved when it was time to pick up Eddie from school. And so they find a way for Teddy to go with Eddie after all, in everything he does.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

What may appear at first glance to be a routine tale of a child's devotion to a stuffed animal is anything but. In his first book for children, Clarke pairs an understated text and colorful cartoon-like pictures to tell the refreshingly funny story of the fast friendship between a feisty teddy bear and his boy. For years Teddy has done everything and gone everywhere with Eddie, so the bear is miserable when he is left at home on his friend's first day of school. Readers might now think that Teddy will have to make the best of a sad situation, since bears can't go to school, but Clarke has no such conventional ending in mind. Eddie's mom calls the teacher, and the next day Eddie leaves for school--with Teddy in tow. The last, comical picture shows the two pals years later, dressed in identical pin-striped suits and carrying identical briefcases. Clarke's antic art, diverting plot twists and winning characterizations will have children rooting for this decidedly droll duo. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Eddie and his bear, Teddy, have known each other since they were both in diapers, and they do everything together. So when Eddie must go to "Big School" without Teddy, both are very upset. Mom spends a rough day trying to comfort a distraught Teddy and finally allows him to accompany Eddie to school the following day. The concluding picture shows a grownup Eddie and Teddy, both wearing business suits, going to work together. While the slight text (a sentence or less on each page) makes this a quick read, suitable for the very young, the concepts and occasional visual humor suggest an older audience. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations are adequate, but the consistently vacant expressions on both boy and bear (staring eyes, fixed smile) are irritating. Teddy looks very much like an inanimate toy bear; that he is apparently real to both Eddie and his mother may be confusing to some readers. While short enough to sustain the attention of most readers, this is a marginal purchase at best.

5.0 out of 5 stars exiciting times!!, June 11, 2003
This review is from: Eddie and Teddy (Hardcover)
My daughter Niamh (age 3) and I love sitting down to Eddie and His Teddy's adventures. All of the series have a fantastic rhyme which makes it as interesting for me as it is for Niamh. The story is as exiciting or as "settling" as the intonation of the reader so is suitable for bed time reading or sofa capers!!
