Book Description

The brutal murder of a teenager-and his family's heroic struggle to transcend it

On November 11, 1994, a Philadelphia teenager named Eddie Polec was brutally beaten and left to die-on the front steps of his own church-by a gang of teenagers from a neighboring suburb. Unfortunately, the tragedy didn't stop there. Within days of Eddie's death, it was disclosed that dozens of frantic 911 calls by bystanders had gone unanswered during a crucial forty minutes when Eddie was still alive and might have been saved. Written with the full cooperation of the Polecs, In Eddie's Name tells of the extraordinary way in which a seemingly ordinary family grappled with a nightmare come true. Rather than seek revenge or sue the city for millions, as seems almost de rigueur for victims' families, the Polecs responded with grace and courage. They sidestepped efforts to exploit the tragedy or to embroil themselves in the politics of a divided, angry city and instead undertook, as a more fitting tribute to a beloved son's memory, to bring about an overhaul of Philadelphia's fatally flawed 911 system. This rare story of decent people who became victims of fate-and chose to respond like heroes-is a heartbreaker and will be an inspiration to readers of all ages.

8 Pages of Black-and-White Photographs

Bryn Freedman and William Knoedelseder are journalists who covered the Polec case from the outset. Managing editor and vice president (respectively) of news at USA Broadcasting in Los Angeles, they are married to each other.

From Publishers Weekly

In November, 1994, 16-year-old Eddie Polec, a member of a middle-class family from the Fox Chase neighborhood Philadelphia, was fatally beaten on the steps of the Roman Catholic church he attended by a teen gang from the nearby suburb of Abington. A husband-and-wife journalist team, Knoedelseder (Stiffed: A True Story of MCA, the Music Business and the Mafia) and Freedman covered the case for USA Broadcasting through the 1996 trial of six young men accused of the crime. Drawing on interviews with family and friends, the authors provide a thoughtful account of the devastating impact of Eddie's death on his two siblings, his mother, Kathy, and his father, John. Although Kathy initially fell apart, her husband coped by immersing himself in the issue of 911 reform, which garnered as much publicity as the murder, since more than 20 calls were made to 911 in the 40 minutes before Eddie was attacked, but no police were dispatched. Although it ultimately resulted in positive changes, at first the 911 issue incited racial tensions (because all six 911 operators who were dismissed were black), which the authors mention but do not fully explore. By limiting their investigation to a sympathetic focus on the Polecs' story, Freedman and Knoedelseder illuminate the issue of victim's rights but do not explore the causes of teen mob violence. Three of the defendants were convicted of third-degree murder, which fell short of John and Kathy Polec's hope that they would receive life imprisonment for murder in the first degree. From Library Journal

This is an extremely well-written book about the tragic death of a Philadelphia teenager named Eddie Polec, who was brutally beaten and left to die on the front steps of his own church. Authors Freedman and Knoedelseder (journalists who are married to each other) covered the Polec case from the outset. Polec was an innocent victim who had his skull crushed by baseball bats by a gang of teenagers from a neighboring suburb, and this book is a tribute to the courageous and heroic efforts of his family to come to grips with the totally needless tragedy. Adding to the misery of the Polec family was the revelation that numerous 911 emergency calls were ignored by insensitive operators during a crucial 40 minutes when Eddie was still alive and might have been saved. Rather than sue the city, the Polecs made a more fitting tribute to a son's memory by instigating an overhaul of Philadelphia's flawed 911 system. An excellent book; highly recommended.ATim Delaney, Canisius Coll., Buffalo, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be at the top of Oprah's list !, November 23, 1999

This review is from: In Eddie's Name: One Family's Triumph over Tragedy (Hardcover)
Anyone who is a teen, parents or lives with teens, or teaches, represents or works with youth in any capacity should inhale this story of menacing youth violence and one family's victory over the evil that spawns it. The Polecs' story will sear the hearts and souls of its readers and cause them to look closely at themselves, their children, their family life, their faith and their communities through a wholly different lens. In this book the brutal details of Eddie Polec's murder and the events that preceded and followed it read side by side with unfathomable hope and potential that is captured beautifully by the authors. The wave of social action that grew out of this family's experience with the tragedy of Eddie's death, the flawed 911 emergency system that failed him and the justice system that underserved him, has already effected changes in human service systems designed to protect life in Philadelphia and have sparked a proliferation of violence prevention programs in local school systems.

"In Eddie's Name" is the sometimes tender, sometimes outraged, but always very human account of what happened when seemingly innocuous and commonplace teen encounters exploded with tragic results. It is a story of family, school and community response to unspeakable trauma which can, and is being used as a very powerful teaching tool by kids, parents and youth-serving professionals and volunteers.

And in a most profound way, this story is also a heartfelt tribute to the Polec family's faith and courage and determination not to succumb as well to the evil that felled their son and brother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hit Close to Home, May 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: In Eddie's Name: One Family's Triumph over Tragedy (Hardcover)
I am 17 years old, and in june 2000 I was brutally assaulted by 3 kids with baseball bats and had to have reconstructive surgery on my skull. This happened about a mile from where eddie was killed, and I'm also a senior at cardinal dougherty high school, where eddie was enrolled. I read this book, and I must say it hit me hard because I was so close to receiving the same fate as eddie. Please if you can take some time to read this book so that we may spread the message of peace to the world, and stop future things like this from happening.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very well written book., May 9, 2000
This review is from: In Eddie's Name: One Family's Triumph over Tragedy (Hardcover)
After watching the Polec's on Dateline NBC recently, I got this book from the library, read it and cried almost halfway through it. I was hoping that the book was fiction and not true but that was not the case. I have every respect for the Polecs, wanting to make the community a better place inspite of tragedy to their son Eddie,They had a wonderful son whose life was taken in a senseless tragedy. I recommend this book to anyone who has children.
