Book Description

9 and up4 and upNeate
Thirteen year old Eddie Delaney loves his dad. But sometimes he wishes that he'd lighten up. His father, a lawyer who grew up during the civil rights movement expects nothing but the best from his only son. And with Eddie’s success as a starter on the basketball team, and his good grades, Mr. Delaney’s been getting it. Then Eddie brings home a D in language arts and everything changes. His parents make him quit the team. And now Eddie’s lost the one thing he knows he’s good at, the very thing that had helped bring him and his dad together. Why is his dad so hard on him? Eddie’s friends decide to find out. But when they dig into Mr. Delaney's past they uncover a secret that rocks the foundation of the already unsteady father-son relationship, and changes Eddie’s life forever.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Eddie, 13, is thrilled to make the school basketball team, but when his grades slip, his dad is furious and makes Eddie quit the team. Tension builds until father and son are barely speaking. But why is Dad so angry? Is he hiding a secret from his past? The fourth book in the series about five friends who hang out together focuses mostly on Eddie, though there is also a lively subplot about Liz, who bonds with the cool new girl, Jasmine, and then becomes jealous of Jasmine's success. The therapeutic stuff is occasionally overdone ("I hear you, and I understand"), but there's plenty of building tension as Dad's secret is revealed and Liz competes with Jasmine in the talent show. The talk is casual and contemporary, and readers will like the family drama as well as the warmth among friends and the realistic view of failure and success. Hazel Rochman

More About the Author

Kelly Starling Lyons began her journey to become a children's book author in her hometown of Pittsburgh. She learned the art of storytelling from her mom who took her to productions at a children's playhouse, wrote Christian plays and made up bedtime tales. Her grandparents, who showed their imagination through cooking and gardening, taught her to honor the magic of history and home. Surrounded by creativity, Lyons began to write.

She curled up near the radiator behind her bedroom door and allowed her pen to take her to other worlds. A canopy of trees transformed into a make-believe fortress, backyards hid treasure and tunnels to faraway lands, bridges that crossed the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio rivers spanned distance and time.

Now a children's book author, Lyons works to transform moments, memories and history into stories of discovery. Her books include a chapter book, NEATE: Eddie's Ordeal (Just Us Books), and One Million Men and Me (Just Us Books), a picture book that explores the Million Man March through the eyes of a girl who was there with her daddy the day black men made history.

She has two forthcoming picture books with G.P. Putnam's Sons that celebrate family relationships and freedom. Ellen's Broom will debut January 5, 2012. It's illustrated by Daniel Minter. Tea Cakes for Tosh will be released fall 2012 and is illustrated by E.B. Lewis.

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving and dramatic story, January 3, 2005
This review is from: Eddie's Ordeal (Neate) (Paperback)
The fourth book in the NEATE series, Eddie's Ordeal is a novel recommended for young adult readers and is about thirteen-year old Eddie Delaney, an African-American boy who loves his father but feels driven too hard sometimes. Eddie enjoys being the starter on the basketball team and gets good grades, but whe he brings home a D in language arts, everything changes. His father forces him to quit the team, and his relationship with his parent takes a very bad turn for the worse. His friends try to help him discover why his dad is so tough on him, and in the process Eddie learns something very important about his father - something that will change his life forever. A moving and dramatic story about facing the challenges of coming of age, and the importance of family bonds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story About a Black Father and Son, January 6, 2005
By
Alan Arline (Jacksonville, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eddie's Ordeal (Neate) (Paperback)
Eddie's Ordeal was a wonderful story that explored the relationship between a black father and son. Thirteen-year-old Eddie and his dad have trouble relating. They come from different eras. A bad grade sends them even farther apart.

Eddie's friends try to build a bridge to reconnect father and son. But it's up to Eddie and his dad to cross. This story was a heartfelt tribute to the growing pains parents and children navigate and the important bond between black fathers and sons. As a black man, I enjoyed reading a story that portrayed African-American characters as multifaceted people, complete with strengths and flaws, instead of stereotypes. This is a great addition to the canon of black children's literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for youth and adults!, December 23, 2004

This review is from: Eddie's Ordeal (Neate) (Paperback)
I was so enthralled with Eddie's Ordeal. There are so few books for youth that explore the communication between fathers and sons. This book crosses cultural boundaries as it addresses the commonalities in relationships with Dads and their sons and the importance of developing understanding between generations. It is a foundation builder and an uplifting story for children.
