Book Description

December 10, 2001
Eddie Senta has a problem, in this hard-boiled, fast-paced novel of crime. His attractive second wife, a highly successful marketing research executive who hears her biological clock loudly ticking, wants a baby. She also wants Eddie to clean up his act. Their marriage is going bad. Nothing's going great for Eddie, in fact. His stints as a firecracker word processor in the legitimate business world dull him, and the kick he once got running for the mob has turned into mere efficiency. Maybe it's a midlife crisis, like his wife's unsympathetic therapist says. Uneasy with the feeling that his world is daily shrinking, Eddie seizes the opportunity, when it presents itself, to make an easy score and at the same time to help out a friend. While Eddie by no means needs the five grand he'll make on the deal, he longs for the thrill--and the reinvigoration of his stale fortyish self--that a quick, uncomplicated robbery might bring. What it brings instead is disaster, for Eddie finds himself implicated in a case of triple murder and in an increasingly dangerous contest with the FBI, a ruthless killer under federal witness protection, two New York City homicide detectives, and a Russian mobster. Eddie gets more excitement than he bargained for in this shrewdly plotted, frequently humorous, and often poignant tale, as his crisis turns out to be a matter of life or death.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Eddie Senta's New York City, the focus of this flawed first novel by off-off-Broadway playwright Stella, is a harsh and unforgiving place. Eddie's a book runner with mob connections and his own skewed version of a midlife crisis. His second wife's burning to have a baby before she gets too old, running book no longer satisfies, his teenage son by his first wife is difficult for Eddie to connect with, and his legit occupation as a part-time word processor isn't panning out too well either. Eddie's not sure what direction his life is going to take, but he has plans for an easy score, as well as to pass on his modestly successful book to friend Tommy Gaetani. The simple burglary Eddie tries to pull off with inside help from a woman with a grudge to settle lands him and Tommy in the middle of a murderous mess. Eddie's mark is a crooked gem dealer, but the problem is, Eddie's not the only one to have targeted the dealer. Stella throws in Russian mobsters, ex-cons, federal agents, Mafia figures, local cops and gangbangers, all of whom convulse Eddie's world. Stella handles the complexities of his plot nicely, but none of his characters, including Eddie, are sympathetic enough to engage the reader. In addition, he lacks the gift for dialogue that allows a pro like Elmore Leonard to carry off similar capers. Nor does he have the sharp-edged humor of a Donald Westlake. An overreliance on the f-word and variants thereof, however realistic coming out of the mouths of Stella's lowlifes, becomes numbingly off-putting after a while. Agent, Bob Diforio.

From Library Journal

Despite a slow start, Stella's debut picks up enough steam to distinguish itself from the scores of other crime novels. Since quitting his mob duties, finding a job as a word processor, and getting married, Eddie Senta has become dissatisfied with his life. His new employment bores him, and his marriage is crumbling because his wife is expecting a child something Eddie definitely doesn't want. Instead of dealing with his midlife crisis by buying a Corvette, Eddie agrees to one last score partly to get a jolt and partly to help out a friend in need. The plan is to conduct a quick and easy job, but, not surprisingly, it goes awry, leaving Eddie suspected of murder, with the police, the FBI, and the real killer chasing him. Stella's characters are all too believable, and the novel manages a lightness throughout despite its dark subject matter. Written by an off off Broadway playwright, this promising first novel should move from library shelves where crime fiction is popular. Craig L. Shufelt, Lane P.L., Fairfield, OH

More About the Author

I was born in Manhattan and brought up in Canarsie in Brooklyn. I attended public and catholic schools in Canarsie until going to Minot, North Dakota on a football scholarship. I was hooked as a reader/writer of modern crime fiction after Dave Gresham (my mentor and English teacher) read the opening lines from the George V. Higgins classic, The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

I have worked as a paperboy, watermelon loader, soda-jerk, dishwasher, McDonalds cook, hallway buffer, porter, security guard, UPS laborer, sheetrock carrier, hallway buffer, porter and bouncer, as well as a union window cleaner on 50-story scaffolds and a word processing operator/supervisor/manager.

My favorite crime authors include George V. Higgins, Elmore Leonard, James Ellroy, Ken Bruen, Daniel Woodrell, George Pelecanos, Craig McDonald, Vicki Hendricks and Rick Marinick.

My novels are considered hardboiled and are dialogue driven. I write about small time operators and their dreams. While I do not condone (or agree) with what some of my characters might say during the course of a novel, I defend their right to be idiots and bigots. If you are looking for politically correct crime novels, skip mine.

Three of my novels are now available on kindle (Eddie's World, my 1st novel), Charlie Opera (my third novel) and Mafiya (my 6th novel). Jimmy Bench-Press (my 2nd novel) and Cheapskates (my 4th novel) will be available on kindle shortly.

I have lived in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Long Island in New York and Perth Amboy in New Jersey. I currently reside in Joisey (once again). I have three children (all grown now), a wonderful tomata (wife--the Principessa Ann Marie) and the most fierce bichon-friese in the world--Rigoletto.

I am an American-Italian and never confuse the two. I was born in America and will never be apologetic about that.

I treasure the time I spend with Ann Marie and Rigoletto like you can't believe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie's World and Murphy's Law, August 30, 2002
By
This review is from: Eddie's World: A Novel of Crime (Hardcover)
So, what could go wrong when a wannabe decides to wind down his criminal career with one last heist? You got it -- everything. Eddie Senta, a part-time street guy and part-time word processor, finally decides to go legit after one last job, a simple heist -- a piece of cake, right? Wrong. Murphy's Law comes into play and Eddie finds himself embroiled in a triple homicide, an FBI manhunt and the daunting task of trying to prove his innocence while hunting down a ruthless killer. Who can't relate to a guy like Eddie -- he's like Job [biblical reference], but with an attitude. Momma mia! The book's plot is intriguing and unfolds nicely and Stella really does have a knack for dialogue (I noticed this mentioned in several of the other reviews). All in all, I thought the book was very entertaining -- interesting characters (wannabes, cops, gangsters and killers) and great story development. Fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp Dialogue Makes Eddie's World a Winner, May 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Eddie's World: A Novel of Crime (Hardcover)
Eddie's World is the story of a man (Eddie Senta) on the fringes of two worlds: one legit and the other Organized Crime. Pressure is added when his wife wants to start a family. When the opportunity presents itself for a quick score, Eddie decides to go for the gusto and that's when the trouble begins. The "quick score" ends up getting Eddie implicated in a triple murder and puts Eddie and his family in extreme danger. The plot unwinds primarily through the author's (Charlie Stella) use of dialogue, and that's what makes this a fun read. If you like the works of Higgins or Leonard, you'll love the real dialogue that Stella uses to move the story along and define his characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tuff Stuff, May 3, 2002
This review is from: Eddie's World: A Novel of Crime (Hardcover)
At the center of this story is Eddie Sante, word processor by day and burglar by night. With his friend Tommy he sets up a sure fire thing that will yield 15?000 dollars. maybe a lot of gold and, if something goes wrong, a carload of computers. Something goes wrong, of course. James Singleton gets to money and gold first, and the computers are too hot to handle.

This book does not really have a plot, but rather a convoluted story line. The not so bad guys get killed off first. Some of the really bad ones survive to the end. Eddie is connected to the Italian mafia. Singleton is being helped by the Russian mafia. The FBI and the Federal Witness Protection Program enter the fray, as do two local detectives. Those two actually do little detecting; they just watch events roll by them. The FBI does not do much, either. But, of course, they know everything. How does an author get out of this mess? By having all participants meet for the last glorious shootout. Whatever is not clear by then, gets killed in the last pages.

An amusing book, but not a brain puzzler.
