Disturbing, poetic, electrical whimsy!, May 4, 2004
This review is from: Eddy Current (Hardcover)
EDDIE CURRENT, McKeever's sophmore graphic novel (following his uncompleted 5-issue TRANSIT) shines with originality, excitement, and compassion in a world of cruelty. The entire story takes places in 12 hours (it was originally published in 12 1-hour issues), and revolves around an inmate in a mental institution who decides to escape his confinement in order to become a superhero and save the world. And, with the help of a mail-order, battery-powered, electric suit, he sets out to do just that. Told from the point of view of a completely (but kindly) insane person, the story never lets up for a second, and you'll keep turning those pages until you wish there were more to turn. McKeever later tied this story (and TRANSIT) rather abstractly into the world of his crowning achievement, METROPOL, with surprisingly powerful results. EDDIE CURRENT is an absolute necessity for any fans of McKeever or anyone who enjoys a good, dark, funny, intelligent tale for grownups. Hunt this masterpiece down if you can!
The hardcover edition collects all 12 issues (with a few extra pages cut back in that weren't in the comics), as well as a cover gallery and some sketchbook pages.
