Product Description

Product Description

The Edelbrock Performer Square Bore Air Valve Secondary Electric Choke New Carburetor features a two-piece, all-aluminum construction for cooler operating temperatures and less warping. It is designed and calibrated for good street performance and fuel economy in 402 CID and larger engines with the Edelbrock Performer manifolds. There are no gaskets below the fuel bowl level for fewer leaks and no plastic parts or power valves to blow out. The Performer electric choke carburetor includes both timed and full vacuum ports for ignition advance. The carburetors use easily changed metering rods for precise tuning. The Edelbrock Performer warranty covers the replacement or repair of the product only and does not cover the cost of removal and installation.

From the Manufacturer

Designed and calibrated for good street performance and fuel economy, the Edelbrock 1406 electric choke carburetor Features a square flange, 600 cfm, plus timed and full vacuum ports for ignition advance. Two-step metering rods allow independent custom tuning of cruise and power circuits. An easy-to-install linkage adapter kit makes installation on automatic transmission Fords and Chryslers a breeze. And, metering rods are changed without disassembling the carb to further simplify the installation process. A wide selection of rods makes it easier to zero in on optimum calibration for the engine. A mechanical secondary air velocity valve senses airflow according to demand, and automatically regulates a smooth transition from part throttle to wide-open throttle.

FEATURES

  • Calibrated for good street performance and fuel economy
  • Full vacuum ports for ignition advance
  • Two-step metering rods for independent custom tuning of cruise and power circuits
  • Easy-to-install linkage adapter kit

Sixties Lincoln owners out there need to know that this is the carb you need for your 430 or 462 Lincoln with a 4-barrel. It is a 600cfm carb tuned for street performance and economy that is essentially the same design as the original carb.

The Edelbrock design uses the Carter AFB design with some improvements made over the last 35 years. Edelbrock bought out Carter some time ago and got the tooling. It's a bolt-on with little or no mods to make to get your Lincoln running. On some Lincolns, you have to grind a little bit of the throttle brackets. My '66 required NO MODS whatsoever for this carb to work.

One note: the fuel inlet is on the passenger side instead of the driver's side, so you either need to bend a new fuel line or buy a the 90 degree fuel line kit to make it fit under the air cleaner. Since you can't see the carb or the fuel line under the air cleaner, it all looks stock anyway.

With free shipping, you can't beat Amazon's price, which ties two other places for the lowest price online. Don't pay $400 for a "Brand New Carter Carbureter" at a classic Lincoln parts seller. Buy this carb here and be satisfied with the easiest carb swap you can make.

I am no motor head, but this carb went in with no problems and worked like a charm. The installation DVD made it near idiot-proof. I had to adjust the idle a little, but that was more of a preference thing. Highly recommend this carb to anyone who needs a reliable user-friendly replacement.

I've been using Edelbrock Performer Series carburetors for almost 15 years now. They are reliable and easy to adjust or modify to meet a stock or modified engines needs for best fuel related performance. Kits are readily available to rejet your carburetor to meet 'special needs' or performance issues.

I like the fuel bowl design since 'leaks' are NONEXISTENT, unlike with some Holly and other models. The electric-choke operates smoothly and is easy to adjust for various climates or conditions. I definitely recommend the Edelbrock Performer Series carburetor that matches your engines requirements.

I have a 1989 Ford F-700 429 4V 5&2 manual trans. bucket truck that had a motorcraft/holley 4 barrel that was completely worn out. It caused backfiring both from the exhaust and back through the carb. I replaced it with a 1406 Edelbrock and it runs great again. The performance is like new and it gets much better mileage, 9 mpg now !!! as compared to about 5 mpg with the old carb. It was a direct replacment the only modification was the fuel line which was very easy. 600 cfm is plenty of carb. for this application. I have owned several Edelbrock carbs over the years and have always had great luck with them.

I have used 3 1406 carbs over the years on different cars. all were very easy to set with years of keeping a tune. My last 1406 I payed extra for the Endurashine model. It was for a car that gets driven less than 1000 miles a year. The first year the top started turning yellow. the second year flakes of clearcoat started to peal off and get sucked into the carb!! I called Edelbrock and they "rebuilt my carb". It returned looking the same crappy yellowish and flaking. I still had the same problem after the rebuild. I was soo mad and switched to Holley for awhile. I just want to let you know that the 1406 carb works good as long as you dont get the Endurashine model. I currently have an old 1406 with no Endurashine that I rebuilt on my mustang.

I purchased this carburetor in hopes of fuel economy and power, not to mention as a replacement for a 26 year old Rochester quadrajet. The installation was a little tricky because of old emmision devices. but once you over came those its incredibly simple. I was once gliding to speed but now i have a rocket. Under load it has no problems performing, and with the turn of the screw you can turn it from fuel economy to maximum power. I do have one issue with this. My tires want to break away and spin. I recommend an adapter or spacer for any engine because it has a huge affect on response. Easy to tune, great performance, and a great deal. This product has breathed new life into a tired 305.

I believe this to be a great carb, if not the best, for its application. It's in my '85 C10 350 5.7 1/2 ton 2-wheel shortbed.
That being said, I will not use this space to repeat what others have said about it's many virtues. Instead, I'd like to give a little advice on what I've learned about these carbs.
For anyone out there that has been doing any research on these carbs online or in magazines, you've probably come across the words "Out of the box" or "Bolt-On" Performance. I believe this to be a misnomer. True, you can literally bolt this carb onto you engine and it will start up and run. Great. But if you dont pull out that little flimsy paper L-shaped measuring device or a micrometer and really read the directions thoroughly, it will not perform anywhere NEAR its ability. I learned this the hard way, and it took me over a year to realize it. I was lazy and in a hurry to get to work that day...
Go through each of the little diagrams, and measure the gaps. Bend those little linkages until you aquire the desired gaps. Those linkages were stamped into shape, and they must 'spring' back a little afterwords, neccessitating YOU to tweak them perfectly. Also, take the time to adjust those floats so that they are perfect, and even. You NEED a consitant and proper bowl level.
Lastly, acquire a FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR AND PRESSURE GAUGE. The regulator can be cheap from Autozone, as long as the guage reads no more than 6psi. Maybe Google "Colortune spark plug" or "Edelbrock Stoicometer" to tune that puppy good. Oh yeah....VACUUM GAUGE!
