This item arrived exactly as I expected it to be. I have used it to make dashi (a Japanese stock using bonito flakes and kombu seaweed) and used the dashi to make miso soup (just add miso and vegetables). It was delicious! I am surely not a bonito flake connoisseur, but these smell right and taste right to me!

Also, they should keep for damn near forever, which is a bonus. :)

Yes, these are purchased for cat treats. I have been getting them at the health food store, however, a huge jump in price up to $8.99 from $5.49 has caused me to look elsewhere. I was foolish for not looking at Amazon before.

Although there are cheaper Bonito Flakes I prefer the Eden brand. The package size is perfect as these are given in limited doses as a treat only. The flakes are easily visible through the package and have always been of large size. Also, the bottom of the bag usually contains few "crumbs". Another preference is that the only ingredient is Bonito Flakes. There is NO Salt or MSG. The 4 count package saves shipping and keeps the unopened bags fresh until use. This is the only fish product my cats will eat.

Just a funny side tail... Their crunchy treats are in a child proofed cabinet ever since the youngest was shown how to open the door, by the eldest, and dragged out the treat bags. However, if the Bonito flakes are open and in the cabinet, the two work together and open the child lock. Therefore, the flakes once opened, are kept in a special container on top of the bathroom cabinet. This is convenient for the cats also, as if we forget to give them a treat they gather in the bathroom and nag until provided with them. This is convenient for me, as the bathroom floor is easy to wash as someone always dumps their dish. In case you are curious, until two weeks ago, we had 9 cats. Now we have 8 and they all love Eden Bonito Flakes.

While this product is more commonly used to make a traditional fish broth, I have been giving my kitties crushed up Bonito Flakes instead of store-bought treats once or twice a week for some time now and they couldn't be happier with the switch! This is all-natural, with no nasty dies for them to blorph up on your carpet and when given in moderation, a dirt cheap treat. It takes a while for some cats to catch on to the whole idea of a lighter than air flaked treat but once they do, they'll do almost anything to get at the bag so make sure you keep them in a very secure cabinet with a baby-lock! I gave some as a gift to my neighbors cats and they climbed the counter, pried open the cabinet door, tore into the bag and ate the whole thing in one sitting! One thing to keep in mind, however, is that what is marketed as "Bonito" is in fact, Skipjack Tuna flakes and not the more expensive Bonito. If these were actual Bonito flakes, the price would be unaffordable. The reason you'll want to know the actual type of fish is to asses the mercury risk to your little friends. Skipjack Tuna is considered a moderate risk to pregnant women and should not be eaten by them an large quantities. Therefore, I limit doling these treats out to about two times a week for kitty and usually just a healthy pinch or two. it's enough to make them the happiest kitties on the planet for the moment they are smelling and eating their flakes! My friends call this stuff "Kitty Kat Krack" and it's best used as a special treat and not an every day treat.

There are two ways to give this to kitty:

1. When you get the bag open it up and set aside the biggest flakes to use as training or reward treats that you hand feed to kitty.

These bonito flakes are very flavorful. I've made a lot more than expected with the small package. If you're looking to cook more Japanese foods, these are a great choice for making dashi.

I found a good price here and ordered 12 pks. i like the eden brand because they are contientious of BPA plastics and such. Eden also screens for radiation (the bonito flakes come from fish in japan) due to the Fukushima disaster. you can buy them at whole foods for $6.99 a pack, or order online and pay a bit less with free shipping (if you order enough quantity).

This is crack for my cats. The only other food they get is canned duck and pea, so this is a real treat. It is a lot cheaper to buy this than what they offer in the pet stores.

What a better review can there be when all the cats love these! The price is a little higher than I liked, but the cats love them!

It was pretty flavorless to me, and I couldn't get my hermit crabs to finish it off either.
