4.0 out of 5 stars Go beyond Bregovic - august 1999, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ederlezi (Audio CD)
First of all I have to thank Kusturica and Bregovic for Underground, that was my first ever introduction to gipsy brass music. I was in shock, stupid that I never had come across this wild music before! My favourite, should play it at my funeral, is Mesecina. But Mr. Bregovic really should tell everyone that he got a lot of his music from the traditional gipsy bands, and not just put in small print that the great Slobodan Salijevic is playing on Underground. And the way Bregovic mixes off his music is quite slick. People, all people and the one in the reviews here (except for the really silly and narrowminded so-called music fan from the USA, people with toughts like you make this world miserable and you don't understand this is great music) please listen to the original balkan gipsy brass bands, even some available here at Amazon. Look out for speed brass from the Fanfare Ciocarlia, Fanfare Din Zece Prajini, the Kocani Orkestar (my absolute favourites), Jova Stojiljkovic "Besir" and his brass orkestar, Orkestar Braca Kadrievi (they play on Time Of The Gipsies). I was happy to have seen most these bands live and that's even better than cd's, and their recorded music is quite hard to find. Mind you, if anyone can give me a tip on Salijevic or Braca Kadrievi or others I don't know yet, please contact me. Because I fell in love with this wicked wicked wild music. And when you are on your discovery trip already, check out Esma, queen of the gipsies, with a voice to blow your mind. Oh, and if you prefer Bregovic after all, you must listen to his album he made with the famous Turkish Sezen Aksu, talking about great voices, what can be more erotic than her singing Ausencia which I know from Underground., sorry Cesaria Evora you can't beat Aksu's performance on this one. With honour to the Balkans, because they have a lot more to offer than just war, Sladica.

5.0 out of 5 stars Survey of Bregovic, November 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ederlezi (Audio CD)
The album EDERLEZI is a short summary of the music of Bregovic, as well as the movies they enchanted , a survey of european music and in a sense history. You can find anything from oriental to tango in this album, and pure, decent music. It is so deep that you will discover something new everytime you listen to it, and you will never get bored of listening.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ederlezi, July 21, 2004

H. Minadeo "Slavic Soul Lady" (Grosse Pointe Michigan USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ederlezi (Audio CD)
Having seen almost all of Emir Kusturica's films, I am an ardent admirer of the master's portrayals of Balkan vignettes, especially those dealing with the Roma (Time of the Gypsies, Black Cat, White Cat). The musical scores of Bregovic took on a life of their own for me, haunting compositions which evoke the sorcery and fire of the gypsies. So I was truly excited to have the Ederlezi album, which does indeed feature the ineffably intoxicating brass band rhythms and the almost painfully gorgeous strains of the Ederlezi song. However, the Ausencia song, the American Dreams items and other non-Roma or non-Serbian tracks do not fit in. I wait for them to go by or tune in to the Balkan portions. I love the Slavic-Roma Bregovic, but my Ukrainian soul does not warm as much to the rest.
