Book Description

Stories of lost love, lost ways . . . and lost minds! Gris Grimly’s mysterious, morbid, and macabre illustrations capture four Poe classics with an unmatchable ghoulish charm. This second installment of illustrated Poe tales, a companion to Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Madness, includes the perennial favorite The Tell Tale Heart, as well as The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether, The Oblong Box, and The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar. With little trimming and lots of gory visuals, these stories have never looked better or more frightening!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up—Four of Poe's morbid short stories are adapted for teens in this heavily illustrated presentation: "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether," "The Oblong Box," and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." Grimly intersperses his horror-infused ink-and-watercolor cartoon art throughout Poe's putrid prose. The effect is an offering that bridges graphic and traditional print formats. Great for readers who adore the gothic and the gruesome.—Richelle Roth, Boone County Public Library, KY END

About the Author

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American writer, poet, and critic.  Best known for his macabre prose work, including the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” his writing has influenced literature in the United States and around the world. Visit him online at madcreator.com

Mr. Gris Grimly is as mysterious as Poe himself. What is known is that his own particular brand of creative brilliance was first seen in many books, including Monster Museum, The Cockatrice Boys, Pinocchio, Creature Carnival, Boris and Bella, and Gris Grimly's Wicked Nursery Rhymes. Then he found himself under the spell of Edgar Allan Poe, and, for years and years, was compelled to give a visual representation of Mr. Poe's ghoulish genius. This book is the result of his mania.

Who doesn't love Poe? Who doesn't love Gris Grimly? Put them together and wow! what a combo!!! I had the pleasure of meeting Gris Grimly at a book signing for one of his very rare East Coast appearances. I just really love his style of art, so when I found out about this book coming out, I immediately knew I had to purchase it. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just in time for Halloween!, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Death and Dementia (Hardcover)
This book is great! It has beautiful and creepy illustrations on each page by Grimly along with Poe's writings. It's a good book to read with school age children for the Halloween season or for teenagers and up who will appreciate the cheeky accompanying artwork. Very cute in a creepy way!
