More About the Author

I make stuff up. And I have fun doing it.

Genre fiction gives me the perfect medium to build worlds where readers can join me for fun adventures. Pick up one of my Men of Defiance historical western romances and slip your fingers around the Colt .45 of a legendary gunslinger, be a scout for a wagon train, or ride shotgun on a stagecoach. Pick up one of my Red Team romantic suspenses and join the battle against international druglords and home-grown terrorists with a hot team of counter-terror experts.

Romance fiction lets you be, for a few sweet hours, something you're not. Which is cool, because every time you look at life through someone else's eyes, you learn more about yourself.

So read often...become who you were meant to be.

I was born a poor, white child into a modestly affluent family, third daughter to a father who wanted only sons. I cooked and cleaned and mended my evil stepmother's and stepsister's ball gowns until my very own Prince Charming stole me away. We had two beautiful children, a boy and girl, who left our granola-eating, tree-hugging family to be warriors and, well, Republicans. Our son heard the siren call of the woman he loves and presented Prince Charming and me with two beautiful grandchildren, a girl and a boy. Our daughter continues on the warrior's path and yearns for a lifemate more alpha than she but has an adorable to dog to occupy her attention in the meantime. And if you believe this fairytale, you'll certainly love my books, so give them a try!

First up, let me say that i bought this book on a whim, after which i read up about Ms. Levine and realised this was her first foray into contemporary romantic suspense having previously written in the historical western genre.

Now, onto the review! A 5 star debut for sure!!! This book had ALL the elements i love; a kick-ass detailed story, a tortured hero and strong heroine and my favourite; lots of hot, sweaty smexing going on!

The Edge of Courage is the first book in Ms. Levine's Red Team series and by the looks of it, this is going to be an AWESOME series! Rocco Silas; an ex-Red Team operative, has come home from Afghanistan a broken man; haunted by extreme PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) brought about by being badly injured and losing his wife, child and unborn child in Afghanistan. He is sent to Mandy Fielding's ranch to help her out and keep an eye on her by his best friend Kit Bolanger (another ex-Red Team op), who also happens to be Mandy's half brother. He doesn't want to get involved with Mandy, knowing that he has too many demons to wrestle with, but Mandy see's beyond this and turns out to be his saving grace. Their relationship was beautiful to watch; how it developed, how Mandy helped Rocco overcome his demons and eventually how he opened up his heart and let Mandy in and in the process helped heal himself.

Mind you, while all this is going on there is still an extremely evil, bad guy/terrorist running around who is out to get Rocco (and by association, the other ex-Red Team ops) for something that happened back in Afghanistan and he won't stop. I'm guessing because this the start of a new series, it is for that reason that we will see more of him in the coming books.

The Edge of Courage (Red Team)
I didn't really like the characters. First of all Mandy was madly in love with Rocco after knowing him a few days. And, during most of her interaction with him he was a raving lunatic or catatonic. Rocco had halucinations every few pages. After the first few times, I felt like, I get it he's broken, get on with the story. The rest of the time they were having sex where he was very dominating and not at all romantic. She was much too submissive for my liking. Within a few days he was speaking and making decisions for her. They didn't know anything about each other. They never even really had a conversation.

Then there was the team of soldiers. Normally I love a team of macho professional warriors. But, these guys were constantly caught of guard and fell into traps that even I saw coming. Good looking but not to bright. The only reason they survived was because the bad guys were too stupid to kill them as soon as they captured them.

Another list of great reviews and trusting my fellow readers, I jumped on it and cleared my evening for a great read. Well, don't rush. Did you ever read a book or watch a movie where you wonder how this could be the hero and the heroine when all they seem to do is stumble through the story? The characters seemed just superficial. The bad guys always know everything, control all the moves, have all the information, blackmail all the trusted people and the good guys do nothing but 'catch up'? Here you go! The premise of the story sounded good but I kept waiting for the actual real story to begin. The good guys knew the bad guys were around and yet they went places alone. They were all prepared and everything was going to be all right except, "Oh yeah, well sorry the barns burned down. Ooops, didn't we tell you we were the secret investors? Well we might have made a mistake. The bad guys may know more than we thought." Really? Everyone seemed to be naive or slow on the uptake that they needed to do some major catch-up. Lets all go out and party. Eesh. Distance and time certainly didn't seem to be a problem. Just improbable. The story never came together and I could put it down without worry plus the number of mistakes also took away from it. With that said, I did find some of the characters interesting so with some major work and a lot of editing the sequel may be better. Goodness I hope so.

Holy Moly - I was flat-out gobsmacked by the intensity and emotional impact this one had on me by the end of the first chapter! The tears flowed. Elaine Levine has written an explosive military romantic suspense. This is a powerhouse completely overflowing with such courage, need and unbridled desire that it sometimes feels much too-close-to-the-real-thing.

After serving deeply undercover in Afghanistan for seven years, our hero Rocco Silas returns home a tortured, broken, and destroyed human being suffering from PTSD. He can't eat - he can't sleep - he can't remember - he can't escape the nightmares. His fear of being touched is on a whole other level of sadness brought about by events unimaginable to me. At times suicide creeps into his thoughts and seems to be his only answer.

Thank goodness, it is at this point that two lives intersect and Rocco meets Mandy Fielding, the step-sister of one of his team mates. Hope and salvation come packaged in a strong young woman, a trained physical therapist, who is filled to the brim with compassion and a giving spirit that runs towards fostering strays in need of help. When she looks into the empty and hollow eyes of Rocco Silas, she resolves to do whatever she can to help in his healing process and give him another chance at life.

As for the developing relationship between Rocco and Mandy, I can't possibly do it justice in my review. Suffice it to say that it is a thing of beauty. There are plenty of sparks, undeniable chemistry, tenderness, as well as differences of opinion. There are also some of the most unforgettable moments between these two characters that I've had the pleasure of reading in all my memories of visits to romanceland.
