Book 2 of Primal Instincts,
By Cynthia A. Frazer "so many books, so little time" (Las Vegas, NV, USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
Another excellent read. Book 2 of the author's Primal Instincts stars Saige, the Buchanan sister who, unlike her brothers, has always been a believer in the legends of the Merrick and the Casus. She is also the one who found the first of the Dark Markers used in book 1. Now she has found the second, and the Casus [two of them this time, and one is the brother of the Casus killed by Ian and is out for revenge] have found her.
The hero is Quinn, a Watchman shifter introduced in the first book. Like the first book the hero and heroine both have issues - they struggle mightily for most of the book before they finally get together. RB does stubborn tortured heroes very well... Read in order, these books [at least 1 and 2 which I've read] are very closely linked and sequential... Primal Instinct 1. Edge of Hunger (2009) 2. Edge Of Danger (2009) 3. Edge of Desire (2009)

I have now read the entire series (i.e. Danger, Desire, Hunger) and it is excellent. A new paranormal society with all the best of good versus evil with a little romance thrown in for your reading pleasure. I highly recommend this series.

strong??? or just stupid?,
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
Couldn't finish this book. Saige is so stupid I couldn't stand it. She lacks the most basic ability to analyze a situation and choose an appropriate response. Running away (for pages on end with nothing but boring internal dialogue) is her method of coping, with no regard for her safety or the safety of others (really? After what happened to her first friend she goes back to see Inez? Maybe you should just go paint bulls-eye's on your friends foreheads.) She literally sneaks out and runs away from Quinn then prays for him to come rescue her. Uhm...I thought she was running away because she didn't want to endanger him - yet, now that she's in danger she wants him there??? How can anybody call this person strong?

super urban fantasy romance,
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
Unlike her skeptical brothers, anthropologist Saige Buchanan strongly believes in the enigmatic Markers. She also accepts her heritage that her siblings deny as true; risking her life to fight the evil Casus.
In Brazil after finding her second Marker, Saige knows a Casus is stalking her while a shapeshifting Watchman Michael Quinn shadows her. He has been assigned by his group to escort Saige to the Watchman's Colorado encampment. However, Saige refuse to accompany him as she trusts no one; not even someone she is attracted to as she is to him; ironically he feels the same way about the attraction and trust. However, trust is what they need to survive a deadly stalker trying to prevent Saige from succeeding. EDGE OF DANGER, the second Primal Instinct urban fantasy romance (see EDGE OF HUNGER) will grip the audience from the moment Saige in Brazil knows the enemy is stalking her and never slows down as she distrusts the Watchman who has come to take her to his camp. As the overarching plot moves forward, readers will enjoy the middle thriller starring a woman who trusts no one and a man who knows he must trust no one. Harriet Klausner

Lovin' Me Some Danger!,
By VampFanGirl (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
Rhyannon Byrd is fast becoming very accomplished at writing the stubborn alpha hero and her efforts shine admirably in 'Edge of Danger'. Michael Quinn is a raptor shapeshifter and Watchman for the Consortium - a organization charged with the task of monitoring supernatural activity. But with the reemergence of a being so fierce and destructive, Quinn and his fellow Watchmen have decided to take action. Quinn's task: Go to Brazil, find Saige Buchanan and bring her back to the base in Colorado. Sounds easy enough but as Quinn will soon find out, nothing about Saige is easy.
Unlike her brothers, Saige has understood and accepted the radical changes in store for her. Her Merrick, the once dormant primal being that lurks beneath her surface, is awakening and with that awakening comes the knowledge that her will to live will soon be tested. For centuries the Merrick genes have been dormant after their arch nemesis, the Casus, were banished into a metaphysical holding cell known as the Meridian. But now, something or someone is releasing the Casus from their prison. After years of isolation, the Casus are mere shades of their former self. As their shades are released from the Meridian, they overtake a human with Casus genes, forcing that humans soul from its body yet retaining their memories and thereby assimilating into the modern world with frightening ease. With her awakening triggered, Saige knows that a Casus is searching for her and not only is the monster looking to avenge its centuries long imprisonment, but she soon discovers that it's looking for the Dark Markers as well. A brilliant anthropologist, Saige has been searching the globe for the mystical crosses that throb with power and protection. It helps that she has the power to read any object she touches and thereby glimpsing its past. After touching many different objects in her search, Saige finally discovered the first Dark Marker in Rome. Sending the Dark Marker on to her brother, Ian, Saige uses the maps that she also discovered at its location to search for the others. The maps are coded and only with her power was Saige even able to decipher the location of the second Dark Marker in Brazil. But when her Merrick senses come alive, Saige knows that the Dark Marker is in jeopardy and she devises a way to have it taken safely out of Brazil. Yet her journey home isn't destined to be easy. Quinn is a dark mystery to both Saige and the reader. Ms. Byrd never let's us forget his gorgeous good looks and rasping deep drawl. The man oozes sexual energy and Saige is helpless as she hungrily soaks him up. And it's not just her human psyche that sparks at Quinn's nearness, her Merrick is stirred up as well and Saige is soon spinning in desire. But it's her distrustful nature that provides her some measure of control. All the men in Saige's life have abandoned her in some way or another and despite the fact that she knows Quinn is a Watchman and is here to protect, her suspicious nature blurs her rational. Quinn's mysterious allure also doesn't help Saige's initial judgement of him either and she resolves quickly to escape but first she wants answers regarding her Merrick. While she has a vast knowledge of the Merrick and Casus, little is known of female Merricks and she wants to understand what her change will entail. Lucky for her, she doesn't Hulk out yet retains the amazing strength that surpasses any human but her need to feed the primal being within her requires fangs and Saige is more than interested in sinking them into Quinn. A dark and tragic past weighs heavily on Quinn's soul. He was betrayed, tortured and forced to watch as his fiance was raped and executed at the hands of the Collective - a human organization bent on the task of eradicating the existence of all supernatural beings. Quinn will do anything to protect his broken heart even if he has to harshly push Saige away and hold her back at a vast distance. He'll not let her become part of his tragedy nor will he ever give her the opportunity to betray him. And while he wants her with a terrible fierceness that would surely scare her, Quinn will not bring himself to get close to her even when she begs. But his heart can't stay shielded forever and he's helpless against Saige's onslaught as she steadily chips away at his resolve. Both Saige and Quinn are naturally distrustful creatures which allows for a lot of back and forth angst coupled with highly explosive sexual tension. Makes for great reading, in my opinion. Funnily enough, both are also highly protective of each other and find themselves in a couple of life threatening situations based on their need to protect the other even if it means lying to achieve the intended outcome. But when push came to shove, Saige proved to be the most courageous with her heart. Yet when Quinn finally comes to realize that Saige is strong, that she can handle his dark possession and raging passions, he doesn't waste time. I really enjoyed 'Edge of Danger'. While Quinn was a stubborn hero, he wasn't as frustrating as Ian from 'Edge of Hunger', which made falling in love with him much easier in comparison. I also loved how Ms. Byrd reminded me time and again of Quinn's melting sexuality. Saige was wonderfully refreshing as well. I love when a character already knows and understands the ins and outs of their supernatural abilities and better still, that they accept it. It gives the reader the opportunity to focus solely on the relationship between the H/h rather than read tedious monologues of their irrational fears with regards to their awakening powers. While Saige tended to throw herself at Quinn, I don't think she would have cracked his shields nearly as effectively if she held her heart from him. Quinn needed to be reassured time and again of Saige's desire. She certainly didn't make it easy for him to ignore her and really he found that he couldn't stay away even if he tried. I'm also enjoying the over-reaching plots and my curiosity has definitely been piqued over the Collective and the corruption that's taking place within the ranks. Definitely some interesting surprises there. It appears as though the Watchmen's roles are not only be questioned but changed as well. These shapeshifters are brave as they are loyal and I can't wait to learn more about each of those sexy heart-throbs.

This is my favorite of the three in this series. My only problem is that I wish there had been more character internalization and self examination, fleshing out of thoughts. Other than that it was a good book. I loved that the author stuck Quinn in the position that she stuck him in. Saige wants nothing more than to 'save' or protect Quinn and it is wonderful seeing these two strong people come together and learn to work and love together. It is interesting to see how the two learn to accept each other for what they are and not based on the past. I love this author's upbeat personalities in her characters. In all it was an exciting read. That comes HIGHLY recommended.

Edge of Danger- A Joyfully Recommended Title,
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
Michael Quinn is a Raptor shifter and a Watchman sent out to find and bring home Saige Buchanan before the Casus find her. Normally the Watchmen do just that, watch, but something odd is happening and Michael's group have decided to be more hands on for right now. Michael locates Saige just in time, which is just the beginning of what was to come. His job would be much easier if he didn't want Saige so badly.
Saige Buchanan knows all about her Merrick background and has accepted it as her future. Saige has been looking for the mysterious markers that somehow are supposed to help the Merrick against the Casus. Being an archaeologist and having her special Merrick gift has given Saige an up in locating the markers. Now she is in the jungle with two Casus after her, her friends are in deadly danger and the Watchman sent to find her attracts both her and her Merrick. Michael and Saige are on the run trying to make it back to Colorado before the Casus can get their hands on either Saige or any of the markers. Another problem is that Collective appear to be helping the Casus. Just what is going on? The attraction between Michael and Saige is compounding on itself but trust is an issue with Michael's past and Saige determine to protect those she loves. Trust becomes an even bigger issue when Saige and Michael have to decide whom they can trust when the final life and death battle happens. Will the Merrick and Watchmen rule the day or will the Collective and the Casus have both a Merrick and a marker? What happens when a Merrick and a Watchman fall for each other? Edge of Danger tells the tale of Saige, a female Merrick, and Michael, a shifter Watchman. Saige has always believed her mother's tales and can tell her time is almost here. Michael took the assignment of bringing in Saige believing he would have no problems. The attraction exploded between them as they set eyes on each other. Life threatening danger made the sexual needs stronger for Saige but Michael has a past that comes between them. There were times while reading that I wanted to ask both Saige and Michael just what they were thinking. Rules sometimes have to be broken and Saige and Michael trampled them in the name of love. Ms. Byrd had me first intrigued and then spellbound from the first page to the last. I would have finished Edge of Danger in one sitting but for that little thing called a job. A well-woven story line and characters that made you believe in them and have to find out what happens next are all reasons why I Joyfully Recommend Edge of Danger. I am now counting the days until the next Buchanan chapter of the Merricks. Jo Reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

Rhyannon Byrd does it again!,
By Patti "Battiann" (Bunkie, Louisiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
OMG! Rhyannon Byrd has added another fantastic installment to her Primal Instinct trilogy. Saige's story will keep you on the edge of your seat as she and Quinn battle their way from Brazil to Colorado. Saige is a strong, yet feminine character, who is on a quest to find the magical Markers that will be needed in the battle against the Casus.
As these two strong individuals fight their way to Colorado their relationship develops, despite many odds, including their pasts. This is a true page-turner. I hope MS. Byrd has more than one book left in this intriguing, compelling series. There are so many other interesting and exciting characters in this new world she has created who have stories to share with us. I for one cannot wait to read and learn about them all.

Great Worldbuilding. Sizzling Hot Romance.,
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
The plot thickens in Rhyannon Byrd's second book of the Primal Instinct Series as Saige Buchanan battles paranormal baddies and meets her match in a sexy shape-shifter named Michael Quinn. The two lovers must overcome their trust issues and learn to work together if they are to elude the various different factions that are out for their blood.
Nobody writes deliciously romantic tales like Rhyannon Byrd. I can't wait for the third book in this exciting series!

Saige is strong but feminine,
This review is from: Edge Of Danger (Primal Instinct) (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed Saige and Quinn's relationship over Ian and Molly's, they both seemed to want to give into there needs more. The author did an incredible job detailing the scenes where Quinn would use his wings. Saige embracing her Merrick immediately makes her a stronger character that her brother Ian. The plot of the casus being released is only thickening...starting to become a nail biter and I am eager to see what with happen with Riley in the Edge on Desire. The story is only getting better.
