5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift for My Grandmother, December 21, 2009

My family and I bought this as a gift for my grandmother that is in a Long Term Care facility and it is ideal for her. We were able to pull together all of our pictures and place them on a memory card - set it to auto-play - and all she has to do is plug in the frame and hit the on-button (FYI: A USB drive works too). It automatically begins playing the pictures we placed on there. And EVEN BETTER - we were able to set the auto-on/auto-off so after she turns it on the first time, she never has to touch it again (unless she wants to). It turns on about 1 hour after she wakes up and we have it turn off about 1 hour before she goes to bed. And it kept the settings even after being unplugged - so we were able to ship it to her pre-programmed. I was hoping this frame was as easy to use as advertised and it was. Great Product! Very Happy with this purchase!

4.0 out of 5 stars Edge 10-inch Digital Photo Frame, November 8, 2010

This review is from: Edge EDGDM-219604-PE Hi-Res 10-Inch Digital Photo Frame with MP3 Player Wireless (Electronics)
We wanted one of these for my Mother-in-law whose 87. Our thought was that we wanted one with Wifi so we could control the picture selection remotely. Unfortunately, I didn't read the description carefully enough. The title ends in the word "Wireless". That has nothing to do with Wifi; what's missing are the words "remote control". Indeed, this frame does have a "Wireless Remote Control" but, no Wifi. But, okay, I thought it was less expensive than the other Wifi ones, I should have known. It's not a fault of the frame, we decided to keep it.

It does do some neat things. For one, the pictures are automatically resized and it does play mp3 music files. All the pictures need to be stored on a memory card and it handles a variety of those; we went with the 4GB SD card that we picked up at Radio Shack on sale for about $7. You can put a lot of pictures on one of those along with a lot of music. In fact, if you want the frame to automatically turn off at night, you might find that the frame at 1 picture per 10 seconds won't cycle through all of them in the time you have it "on" during the day. That can be an issue, because when the frame first comes on, it doesn't remember where it left off; so it starts from the beginning. The same with the music. Each time it comes on, it starts at the beginning and plays through the songs as far as I can tell, in exactly the same order.

I would have preferred to have some control over the order of the pictures and of the music. But, I can't find any reasonable way to control that. Also, there's not a "random" setting to shuffle either the pictures or the music. Other reviewers noted the same thing.

When we first turned ours on and tested it, before giving it as a gift, we tested it in on a bedside table in our bedroom. In artificial light, or at night, it looked bright and easy to see. When we delivered it, we found that the chosen display area was in a sunny room on a shelf close to eye height. That was a different story. The combination of the viewing angle when seated and the brightness of the room made the photos hard to see in the daytime; although they were more than bright enough at night.

There is a very nice "clock and calendar" mode which is easy to see in any light and which was a welcome relief from the music and pictures. Switching between the two modes was somewhat challenging for an 87 year old, using the remote control. The remote control could be better. The first thing we noticed is its seemingly limited range. You almost have to be right in front of the frame and less than 4 feet away before it works reliably. Also, the rectangular shape of the remote makes it easy for someone with limited sight to get mixed up about which way it is pointing. There are lots of buttons on the remote; they are labeled with small "international" symbols. This is another stumbling block for older users.

I have yet to get the frame to play a video file. The native format from the iphone was not recognized as a viable format. Neither were the Windows wmv files. Supposedly an avi file will work; but, when I tried it, it didn't seem to. The movies don't seem to play inline with the pictures either. Unless I'm mistaken, the frame has to be in "movie mode" to play the video files.

When the music is playing softly, it doesn't sound too bad. We loaded it up with classical piano pieces and they easily melt into the background. Unfortunately, with age, hearing deteriorates. So, when we visited recently we discovered that in order to hear the music clearly, the volume was turned up to about 50% of max. At that volume, the limitations of the "stereo speakers" become obvious. People with normal hearing will find it difficult to listen to; it's a bit on the "tinny" side.

This is not a bad product. It's just not a "great" product.

We bought the frame for my mom, who is not very good with technology. She is able to easily use it. Picture quality is good. Recommend this product!
