Book Description

April 1985
Two young people discover unknown strengths inside themselves when one is kidnapped and the other tries to save him.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The British author's first novel, Born of the Sun, scored a hit in England and in America, which this thriller almost surely will also. Cross makes the reader anxious over the fate of a kidnap victim, Tug, and a friend-in-need, Jinny. Hearing suspicious noises in a cottage in her village, Jinny interests herself in the oddly attractive woman and her cruel partner, Doyle, who have rented the little house. The girl becomes convinced they are holding the son of TV personality Harriet Shakespeare, for motives bafflingly different from those usually proclaimed by terrorists. News of the crime is trumpeted in all media, worldwide, and Doyle soon brings crowds to the locale. As the vicious abductors are about to shoot Tug, Jinny risks her life to save him in the shocking last act of the drama. Stylish writing, an ingenious plot and intriguing characters add up to corking entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars On the Edge, May 7, 2002
This review is from: On the Edge (Library Binding)
I thought this book was adventurous. I enjoyed reading it because I would always be trying to guess what was going to go on in the next sentence. A woman was finding love in a boy that she kidnapped. She wanted to find love in a child that she did not have. There is a bond between the woman and the boy. In the end the boy has to make a very important decision in his life. Love or reality? Readers in the area between 12-15 would enjoy this book. Try it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Young Owners Review of On The Edge by Gillian Cross, April 7, 2002
A Kid's Review
I bought this book in my local library when I read the blurb. It sounded really exciting, and I couldn't wait to read it. I read it three times in the first week, and can remember extracts:

"I could die. Not in 100 years, or when I'm very old, but now. Today or tomorrow. In this room."

I couldn't put it down. It is thrilling, exciting and realistic. I would recommend it to teenagers who enjoy adventure stories, or want a break from your ordinary 'daily life of a normal person' book (Not that there's anything wrong with that type of book :) )

5.0 out of 5 stars great suspense for middle-schoolers, December 3, 1998
This review is from: On the Edge (Library Binding)
An excellent treatment of individuals working to define themselves as unique from one's family while also being a product of the same. This suspense filled novel could be used in a classroom developing other topics of study including terrorism and principles, love and family. Will keep you on the edge.
