4.0 out of 5 stars technically brilliant but could use a hook or two January 31, 2012
Format:Audio CD
It's kind of hard to level any kind of criticism toward a band that can play circles around you or the competition, and Sylosis are definitely at the top of their game as far as modern thrash is concerned.
"The Edge Of The World" is an ambitious slugfest of an album. The guitars move along at the speed of light, and stay on the side of thrash without venturing into Dragonforce territory, where a band like this could end up, and that would not be good. Josh Middleton is a fine guitarist indeed and for the genre a powerful vocalist. The band flirts ever so slightly with some more prog oriented outfits, Dream Theater comes to mind, but stays solidly within the thrash boundaries, unlike Revocation, where that band delightfully hops all over the place, especially in mid-song breaks.
And that is where the problem, if any, lies. Sylosis are fine representatives of modern thrash, and the acoustic interludes and occasional keyboards add the necessary color to the manic guitars. What would make a good album better to me would be a bit of a groove here and there just to mess with the tempos a bit. But that's a personal thing, not a criticism. "The Edge Of The World" is a lengthy CD and requires repeated listenings before it starts to grow on you, but that too is usually the sign of an album that won't get dull any time soon. Fans of Megadeth and other more complex thrash outfits will be happy with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars None Better April 20, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Best album of all time hands down. I feel bad about only giving it 5 stars. Buy several. This album should be a million times platinum.

5.0 out of 5 stars best band i've heard in a while August 10, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
melody, heaviness, softness and amazing guitar playing. one of the best albums i've heard in a long while. and i have been a metal fan since 1985. if you're a guitar player you must own this album. vocals aren't too bad either. guttaral mayhem without all the screechy shrills.

5.0 out of 5 stars VINYL review May 23, 2013
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
So, this is one of my favorite metal albums of the last decade. It's simply incredible, but it took a little while for me to warm up to it, but then it grew on me very quickly. Anyway, the music is amazing, give it a try. About the vinyl edition, it's spectacular. I've had this on CD for a few months before I got it on vinyl, and the vinyl brought an entirely new listening experience to my ears. It's spectacular. If you still can, get the 2 LP Back On Black release. They're blue records. The gatefold is simply beautiful. I love the artwork. If you don't have a turntable, what are you waiting for? Buy one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Punchier Gojira November 19, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Great technicality and finesse. Vocals are amazing; low and gritty and high/emotional when they need to be. An amazing album. Most people call them thrash but to limit these guys to just thrash metal is an injustice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Band! May 8, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Had the honor of seeing these guys open for Lamb of God in support of their Monolith album. Impressive! So, went back to listen to some earlier music and bought this album. Worth the purchase \m/!
