It's kind of hard to level any kind of criticism toward a band that can play circles around you or the competition, and Sylosis are definitely at the top of their game as far as modern thrash is concerned.
"The Edge Of The World" is an ambitious slugfest of an album. The guitars move along at the speed of light, and stay on the side of thrash without venturing into Dragonforce territory, where a band like this could end up, and that would not be good. Josh Middleton is a fine guitarist indeed and for the genre a powerful vocalist. The band flirts ever so slightly with some more prog oriented outfits, Dream Theater comes to mind, but stays solidly within the thrash boundaries, unlike Revocation, where that band delightfully hops all over the place, especially in mid-song breaks.
And that is where the problem, if any, lies. Sylosis are fine representatives of modern thrash, and the acoustic interludes and occasional keyboards add the necessary color to the manic guitars. What would make a good album better to me would be a bit of a groove here and there just to mess with the tempos a bit. But that's a personal thing, not a criticism. "The Edge Of The World" is a lengthy CD and requires repeated listenings before it starts to grow on you, but that too is usually the sign of an album that won't get dull any time soon. Fans of Megadeth and other more complex thrash outfits will be happy with this album.

melody, heaviness, softness and amazing guitar playing. one of the best albums i've heard in a long while. and i have been a metal fan since 1985. if you're a guitar player you must own this album. vocals aren't too bad either. guttaral mayhem without all the screechy shrills.
