Book Description

Dr. Cameran Young knew her assignment wouldn't be easy. As lead biologist on the Environment Impact Assessment team, her findings would determine the future of a large mining project in the northern Canadian bush. She expected rough conditions and hostile miners—but she didn't expect to find a dead body her first day on the job.

Former SAS Sergeant Daniel Fox forged a career as a helicopter pilot, working as far from the rest of the human race as possible. The thrill of flying makes his civilian life bearable, and he lives by his mantra: don't get involved. But when he's charged with transporting the biologist to her research vessel, he can't help but get involved in the murder investigation—and with Cameran, who awakens emotions he's desperate to suppress.

In the harsh and rugged wilderness, Daniel and Cameran must battle their intense and growing attraction while keeping ahead of a killer who will stop at nothing to silence her...

"Anderson writes with a gritty, fast-paced style, and her narrative is tense and evocative." -USA Today

About the Author

Toni is a former marine biologist who conducted her Ph.D. at the Gatty Marine Laboratory in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.  She was born and raised in the U.K., but now lives in the Canadian prairies with her husband and two children, living about as far from the ocean as possible. Her stories are set in the stunning locations where she's been lucky enough to live and work--the blustery east coast of Scotland, the remote isolated mining communities of Northern Labrador, the rugged landscapes of the U.S. and the Red Center of Australia.  She escapes the long brutal Canadian winters by writing Romantic Mystery and Suspense stories.

Toni Anderson's first Romantic Suspense novel, HER SANCTUARY, was released in 2009.  She writes about her life and travels on her blog, facebook and twitter.  Readers can sign up for her occasional newsletter and check up on her latest releases on her website and Toni Anderson's books Facebook Page.

Dr. Cameran Young is a young biologist whose assignment is to study the fish migration in a specific Canadian location and find out what the environmental impact of the building of a mine would be on the fish population. The research site is literally in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, which is a great challenge for Cameran, since she suffers from diabetes. Daniel Fox is a British ex-elite soldier who works now as a pilot in the remote Canadian wilderness. He loves his drink, adores women and doesn't want to be reminded of his days at the army, where he was forced to take some actions that still haunt him. No matter how different in character and orientation in life Cameron and Daniel are, their acquaintance starts with a blast since only moments after their first meeting in a local bar Cameran discovers the body of a young local woman in the bar's restroom and Daniel considers it prudent to isolate her immediately from the crime scene. Cameran is too shocked to register Daniel's evasive maneuver only to ask herself later if she can trust this attractive man. Especially when she finds out that due to his army background he would've had the skill to kill.

Due to her diabetes Cameran has to live a very carefully organized life which means many restrictions and limitations. However, she has decided to enjoy every day that is offered to her as normally as she can. Her emotions and fears were very realistically depicted and presented her as a courageous and likeable person.

Daniel was a more complex and difficult character who developed throughout the story. As a member of an elite unit of the British Army he has made some difficult decisions which haven't yet allowed him closure. The fact that he lost his career in the army and has tried more or less halfheartedly to build a new one hasn't helped him at all to find new equilibrium in his life, which he drowns in alcohol and by womanizing.

The story line was interesting enough and kept me focused, the villain's motive was comprehensible and well presented, the sub characters, especially the law enforcement officer, were supporting the plot perfectly.

Outstanding however was Daniel's transformation from a dark and sinister alpha male to a caring and loving man who didn't hesitate one moment to risk his newly established career and break some serious laws to save the life of the woman he loves. The author managed perfectly to support this transformation with the perfect description of landscape and atmosphere ranging from dull and dark to brightness and glory, always according to Daniel's state of mind. Perfect!

This book offered me many pleasurable hours of reading! Highly recommended!

Cameran Young is a biologist who along with her team has come to the northern Canadian bush to do a Environment Impact Assessment. When they arrive in town and are waiting for the helicopter pilot that is going to take them to the ship where they will be stationed for the next 3 month they realize the miners aren't happy they are there fearing they are going to ruin their jobs. Once the pilot shows up Cam decides to head to the bathroom for a quick break and gets the shock of her life. A dead body of a young woman.

Daniel Fox used to work for the United Kingdom Special Forces known as SAS (Special Air Service). After having to leave in unfavorable circumstances due to something tragic that happened on his last mission he decides to come to Canada to be a helicopter pilot. His way of getting through life was drinking and having meaningless sex to keep his mind off of the disaster his life had become. After going to check on Cam and finding what she found in the bathroom he realizes his ingrained instincts to protect are still there and he isn't happy about it.

Cam and Daniel aren't your typical Hero and Heroine. We as the reader's know that Daniel is suffering from PTSD even though he hasn't figured it out himself. Daniel does something early in the book that would probably turn most women off but for me I understood he was in emotional pain and was just looking to numb it anyway he could. Cam has diabetes type 1. She has had it since she was 14 and has decided that she isn't going to let it rule her life and keeps tight control over it. When Daniel first see's her injecting herself with insulin he thinks she is a junkie but once she explains he is even more frustrated with himself because now he really feels he has to protect this woman who comes out to the bush with a disease he doesn't really understand and he doesn't understand his attraction to Cam either and he tries to fight it so hard at first.

We get quite a few POV's in this book. One of the characters I liked the best was a Staff Sergeant with the Canadian Mounties. Poor guy gets called to the scene of the murder after he had taken a Viagra on the advice of his marriage counselor and his wife to try and save his marriage. They convinced him he was suffering from ED. So his first meeting with a young female officer that has been assigned to him is quite comical.

I loved the scene descriptions of where this book took place. There wasn't only the threat from multiple bad guys but also from nature and the animals.

I also have to give the author credit for a very realistic description of a person living with diabetes. My son has type 1 and I can tell you everything Cam goes through is very realistic. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I think I just found a new favorite author. Toni's plots are all unique. The conflicts are real. The dialogue never feels forced or scripted. Thank you for keeping me entertained with suspense laced with romance and wit.

4.0 out of 5 stars So happy I found this author!
The characters are real and flawed. The suspense is great. It's a romance, but there's always a deeper story and I love that.
