This item failed after 4-5 months of use. The seller, Compact Appliance (Living Direct) told me to send it back at an overall cost of $75 shipping and $75 minimum charge to look at it. Due to this $150 expense I opted to have a local air conditioning company evaluate the problem. Their conclusion was that the leaking evaporator coil, and no freon, reflected use far beyond 5 months. They also provided documentation to support their analysis. Compact Appliance and Living Direct refused to accept my claim that this was not a new item, and refused to further deal with my problem, stating they only sell new equipment. I have opted to pursue my complaint through Amazon and other agencies. BUYER BEWARE!

I'm very disappointed. It's much bigger than I thought, it's also very loud (49db) and I didn't realize that the hose makes it stick out into the room, even on its shortest length. The unit is black, but the hose is white, and inescapable aesthetically.

To make matters worse, when it's very humid out (which is what we get here when it's hot) the evaporative elements can't handle the wet and it fills up the drain basin and then the unit stops running until you drain it. The drain release is about 1" off the floor, so you either have to disconnect the whole unit from the hose and roll it somewhere to drain it, or you have to use a baking sheet with a 1" lip and then figure out how to get that water into the bathtub or sink without spilling it off the pan. I really don't understand the design, and I had to drain it 3 times in the first two days I had it. Ick.

I decided to return it, but you have to pay the return shipping in the original packaging using the method they chose to send it to you, so for me that meant $72 to return it. Plus, since I got it with free shipping, it was subject to a 15% restocking fee, so there's another $46. I had to decide: do I lose $118 for NOTHING, or do I keep something I spent $300+ on that I really don't like, something that's loud, something that's big, something that doesn't drain easily when it's full (and it gets full often).

Avoid the hassel I went through. If you do decide to buy this silly unit, get it LOCALLY so you can return it two days later when you're equally disappointed--without losing over $100.

I purchased this unit in June of 2012. I used it during the summer months June - August and it worked well. I turned it off and did not try to use it again until the following summer. When I went to use in June of 2013 the unit did not function properly. It would no longer cool the room. I performed a number of troubleshooting steps... checking the filter, ensuring it was clean, checking the water drain level, etc. Everything appeared to be fine but the unit did not work.

I called edgestar and they informed me that the product labor warranty was only 3 months but the parts were covered for 1 year. That was great except for the fact that labor is not cheap and I paid a lot of money for the unit already. To have to have it repaired after only 3 months of actual use frustrated me. I don't really have the money to spend on repairing a unit that is virtually brand new. I spoke to several reps at the company and none really seemed to care or have any concern or desire to help. I emailed my complaints via their website which had a check box to request that someone from the company call me. I checked the check box but nobody ever called.

I personally will never buy or recommend an edgestar product again. Buyer beware!

We ordered this because my 20 y/o son lives in a converted 2 car garage and our home HVAC system does not cool this room because it was not intended to do that. The room is probably somewhere between 400-500 sq ft. I bought a portable swamp cooler that we had to keep filling up with water but it failed to cool the room. This EdgeStar 10K BTU AC does a great job of cooling this big space. I had looked at several different portable ACs but saw where this one could be used with windows where they slide from side to side instead of up and down. Setup was easy and the hose that goes out the window fit easily with the panels provided. They also give you some foam installation to put around the panels/window which was nice. I had to figure out a way to block the window from sliding further as I did not want anyone to break into the house. I was able to find a wooden rod that fit perfectly into the window track and it won't move now. Anyway, my son runs it on about 75 degrees and it quickly cools off his big room. It can be set all the way down to 61 degrees but we have not had to run it that low to get the room cool. He tells me during the night he has to turn it off sometimes because it gets too cold. We live in El Paso, TX and it gets up over 100 degrees in the day. This AC has not had any problems cooling the room even when it is that hot outside. There is also minimum installation in the walls, because it was suppose to be a garage, but the room keeps cool. I have not noticed any big hit on the electric bill running it. My son turns it off when he works or not at home. Like I said it does not take long to cool the room off so turning it off when he is not home is not a big deal. If you are looking for a good unit, this one might be for you. We have low humidity here so no issues with it filling up with water like another review said.
