Editorial Reviews

Having worked with Leo Abrahams on the Brian Eno led Pure Scenius project, Hyde once again collaborated with him on EDGELAND, a deliberately more spontaneous and organic project compared to his work with Underworld. The album was lyrically and conceptually inspired by the city's hinterlands and hidden corners.

Long before version 1 & 2 of Underworld (more than 30 years ago to be exact), Karl Hyde first started with the band Freur - a synthpop band that while very electronic, had an organic "band" side to their music. The hit single Doot Doot was their most well known track. They dissolved quietly after two albums, but overall their music was eclectic and fun.

On his first solo album release, Karl returns to that more organic side of his music, albeit much more introspective and atmospheric this time around. Edgeland is NOT for the casual music fan. Being a huge fan of Underworld and a moderate fan of Freur, I eagerly purchased the deluxe version of Edgeland. The verdict? Well, if you are expecting more electronica ala Underworld, you will be sorely disappointed. This album is very quiet and beautiful, with piano, guitar, and sampling taking the forefront from a musical standpoint. I would go as far to say this album has more to do with a return to that quirky fun songwriting that can be found on some of Freur's track. However, Edgeland is much darker and takes a much different journey.

My favorite aspect of Edgeland is Karl's singing. For the first time in a long time, his voice is (mostly) free of effects, showcasing the fact that the man is indeed a singer and he has a very beautiful voice all by its self. Edgeland definitely contains the finest vocal melodies I've ever heard from Karl. If you don't believe me, sample the track Shadow Boy - the finest cut on the record. The deluxe edition comes with 2 bonus tracks and two remixes, as well as a DVD. I have not seen the DVD as of the writing of this review - maybe someone else can comment on that at a later time.

In closing, if part of the reason you enjoy Underworld is Karl's singing, then this record is a must have.

I have always loved the vocals that linger in Underworld's music. Karl Hyde's solo album brings his vocals to the front yet keeping the broken lyrical style of Underworld. My favorite track, 'Shoulda been a Painter' has a little essence of Underworld but reaches out to a more atmospheric place.

While I've enjoyed most of Underworld's post 1991 output, I couldn't help but marvel at Karl Hyde's ability to restrain his gift for melody. This album hearkens back to his days with Freur and the first two Underworld albums (Underneath The Radar & Change The Weather), and a welcome return it is. Spacious soundscapes against his unmistakable vocal delivery. Recommended. The recent Eno collaboration (Someday World & High Life) pale in comparison to this.
