If the Big Band era was drawing to a close by 1950, none of the patrons of Madison, Wisconsin's lavish Edgewater knew or cared. As many as 2,500 cued up for admission to the exquisite, outdoor Starlite Roof, where they danced to the music of big band icons. Woody Herman and his New Third Herd's appearance of July 12, 1950, and that of Jimmy Dorsey's Orchestra on August 4, 1952, are typical of The Edgewater shows. These recordings capture a pivotal moment in the evolution of American popular music, when the sound of an era was beginning to fade, but still found an enthusiastic audience.
