Book Description

A lot of people think an open bottle of wine magically turns into vinegar if you leave it alone too long. Honestly, if you’re the kind of person who forgets about wine bottles for 2 or 3 months in the summer, there are low odds you’ll even be right. You don’t have to leave it up to chance, though. Making your own vinegar from scratch is surprisingly easy.

Vinegar is so ancient there aren’t any written histories detailing how it came to exist. That’s where guides like this come in. We gently walk you through the steps necessary to create a “Mother of Vinegar,” explain how to keep everything nice and hygenic, and show you how incredibly easy it is to create your own wine or apple cider based vinegars at home.

Vinegar is one of the oldest foods still part of everyday cuisine. People started making it at home not too long after they started making wine. It was considered ancient by the time the early Greek city states got around to citing it in recipes and medicines. Creating your own vinegar at home is a great way to become part of a human culinary tradition dating back to prehistory. Get your fedora and whip. This is going to be fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homemade Vinegar - YUM August 5, 2012
By Choppy
Format:Kindle Edition
Okay, I haven't tried the recipes yet, but the book is such fun I couldn't wait to share my thoughts.

The author writes really well and uses a wonderful sense of humor to introduce us to a relatively simple but time intensive procedure. Most of us would never have thought of making our own vinegars, but this is an eye opener. Now that I have the basics (and then some), I'm planning all kinds of homemade vinegar infusions - okay, the basics first.

By the way, if you're at all like me and have problems reading poor writing (grammar or spelling issues): Have no fear! I only found 1 small glitch. It was a delightful read.

Time to go, I need to check out the other Edible History recipe books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful little work February 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you've ever wanted to make your own vinegar, this is a fabulous little book. It is well-written (I only spotted two tiny errors) and humorous, keeping the reader's interest while giving practical advice for the foodie. This is very short, only about 10 minutes worth of reading, but is very informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds Simple Enough November 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Can not wait to try it out! This author put it so simple that even a stupid idiot should be able to do this! Why pay big money for vinegar that is some times tasteless? I never knew you could make your own, and I plan on trying all 3 varieties, can't wait to have my own red wine and garlic variety that is so hard to find in the local stores! Thanks so much for the touch of humor also, I really enjoyed this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Now, where did I leave my corkscrew??? February 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This booklet length offering will help get you started making your own delicious vinegar. The author offers both easy recipes or ones which are a bit more involved and take more time. Information on making white, red or hard cider vinegars is given with the emphasis on KISS (keep it simple stupid). This sounds too easy to pass up so I'm off to get my mother vinegar started...first though, I need to sample the red wine I'm using as my starter. Wahooooo!!!
