This laminated brochure shows pictures and gives descriptions of the most common edible and poisonous plants and fruits in North America. I'll put it in with our camping supplies, as a handy reference.
I didn't realize it was just an accordian-fold brochure when I ordered it, but looking again at the description, it does mention the size. Just not enough detail to tell me it wasn't a book. It actually says "paperback" and "on the back cover" in the description. Everyone who likes to eat greens and fruit from the outdoors should find this reference very useful and reassuring.

Edible Wild Plants: Intro to Familiar N. American Species,
This review is from: Edible Wild Plants: An Introduction to Familiar North American Species (North American Nature Guides) (Pamphlet)
If you're looking for a quick, easy, general reference guide, this pamphlet could prove very useful for hiking, teaching a class, or group study. Due to my own oversight, I didn't realize it was a pamphlet rather than a book which was what I was really looking for. It doesn't list as many plants as I hoped, but it is handy to carry and colorful pictures are very helpful for identification.

This is a great addition to anyone's collection of quick reference cards. The illustrations are well done and true to life. The card covers several species and regions of the country. Great buy overall.

First off, this is by no means a fully unabridged guide to edible plants. For that you will need to get a Peterson Guide. However, if you do have a Peterson Guide at home, then read it and just carry this field guide as a reminder.
The pictures are actually drawings, but they are very good. It even has a few common poisonous plants listed so you don't eat them by mistake. Lamination is nice, plus the size is really good for putting in a backpack or large fanny pack. Overall, get a good resource like Peterson for home. Study it well, but don't bring it with you. It takes up way too much room. Bring these small field guides for easy reference.

Just a tri-fold pamphlet, not a book.,

Overall rating: 3 stars
Plant identification: 3 stars Plant uses: 2 stars Picture type(s): color drawings Who will find it useful: day hikers, backpackers, hunters, Notes: This laminated pamphlet is designed to be stuffed into your bag and pulled out at random moments. Being only 22"x8.25" it covers only a small number of plants and doesn't give any information on how to harvest or prepare the plants for eating. |
