The remastered reissue of Piazzolla Interpreta A Piazzolla will be heard as a godsend by fans who have been unable to obtain the album in its original form. I forgot what truly incredible album this is until I ordered this Sony/BMG Edicion Critica remaster and heard it with new ears.
This album features Astor Piazzolla circa 1961 with the first recordings made with his newly assembled quintet. One of its important aspects is the carryover of Horacio Malvicino on electric guitar from Piazzolla's late 1950s Octet which introduced a number of modernizing elements to tango and which renewed it and changed its trajectory forever.
Since my reintroduction to this album, it has become one of my favorites as I realized its place of importance in the Piazzolla oeuvre. I like every song including what is one of my favorite versions of the ubiquitous Adios Nonino. Other favorites include the inventive Contrabajeando, Decarisimo, the splendid Lo Que Vendra, La Calle 92, Bando, and Guitarrazo. What this quintet has wrought is simply spectacular!
The liner notes state that this music was made not for dancing, but for listening. That's the beauty of Piazzolla Interpreta A Piazzolla. Astor Piazzolla is playing the kind of music he wants to play instead of playing what the record company wants him to record. He does that for them on some other albums, but on this album you hear pure Piazzolla.
Like other CDs in the Edition Critica series, this one is accompanied by a fold-out insert that features the original liner notes, a Piazzolla biographical sketch, and important commentary particular to this album by Diego Fischerman (all in Spanish). If you have not yet added this remastered edition to your collection, the time to do so is now while the price is trifling. You will be forever glad you did.
