I have these set up in a rather large room and the speakers are loud! the bass rattles all 3 floors of my house! sound quality remains great even at high volumes. And WOW at the size of the subwoofer. Way larger than I was expecting The only thing i wasn't prepared for was the input for the 5.1. I use these mainly with my laptop / Ipod and had to purchase an adaptor (link below). Not a huge drawback. Overall great buy. Don't waste your money on a logitech z5500.

I found myself in search of a new sound system for my Mac Pro after my Klipsch Promedia 4.1's subwoofer gave out after ten or so years of ownership. I was very disappointed in the limited options for a high end sound system for pc's these days. While the market is awash with 2.1 systems, there are few 5.1 systems to be found out there. I was equally disappointed to find that Klipsch no longer makes either the 4.1 or 5.1 systems... and their last Promedia 5.1's demonstrated unreliability of the subwoofer after three months or so in the majority of reviews that I had read. I spent about two weeks searching the web for a sound system to replace my much loved Promedia 4.1's, and even considered just trying to get the subwoofer repaired instead. I looked at the Logitech z5500's and the Bose Companion 5's and was just about to settle for the Logitech z5500 when through my searching I landed on reviews of the Edifier S550 at [...] and went on to look at them in more depth. It was difficult to find a poor review of these speakers. In head to head match up's, the Edifier's came out on top, capturing the highs and lows, better base, better all around price, and better quality construction.

So, I took the plunge...

The speakers arrived today. It took some time to set up the system because of the connectors and the fact that Mac's don't have 5.1 sound cards, and this is not the easiest system to hook up to a receiver. I ended up buying two sets of Y-Cable's (2F-1M by Kicker) and some RCA Plug Couplers, along with a Stereo Mini to RCA "Y" cable 1.8m, to connect it to my computer. I do not know how much this affects the sound quality... I'm sure some audiophile will say it does, but I am not an audiophile, I just know what I like in terms of sound.

So I got these as a gift from my girlfriend when my home theater system broke. The reviews here are pretty well detailed so I will provide a basic summary of the pros and cons.

Pros:
- Sturdy construction
- Huge sub woofer
- Clear sound
- Nice remote and nice wired controller

Cons:
- Difficult setup (lack of colour co-ordination or any labelling on wires makes it difficult to connect properly)
- Wired remote has short cable: could not place it where I want it and obviously due to the unique connector I could not buy an "extension"
- No way to play sound out of all speakers. My logitech had an option called "matrix" which would allow sound to play out of all speakers even if the output was 2.1. Can't find this feature on my Edifier.

If you are looking for the best quality speakers for your computer, your search has ended. The rich sound from the mids and tweets are unmatched by anything else on the market, and the deep full bass is powerful. There's an old saying, "you get what you pay for," these speakers are inexpensive for what you get!
