5.0 out of 5 stars These are just plain cool!, November 27, 2008

You may have to be a techie to appreciate these carbon filament reproductions. I just enjoy the original electric light look and feel ... the soft, orange-yellow glow in the hand blown, imperfect, Edison style vacuum chambered tradition.

These are best enjoyed in an antique desk fixture with a straight Arrow socket. Straight Arrow sockets have the smooth feel of turning up a gas light and were contemporary with the carbon filament bulb ... no click, just a smooth transition from off to on ... you can find an old fixture on e-Bay for $20.

As a note, the wattage ratings on these 'next generation from gaslights' seem understated. A 30w is more than a modern nite light, but not much. I use the 30w as ambient light in my office and I'd describe it as a bright candle-like affect. I have a 60w as an outdoor side light in a transparent glass fixture. You'd be wasting your effort if you plan to use one in a translucent fixture. They just don't throw off the comparable light of modern tungsten filaments, but they absolutely create a unique light your ancestors could appreciate. I'd suggest doubling the wattage of the carbon filament bulb to get close to the tungsten equivalent you might be replacing ... even then, you may not get the equivalent light spread. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm glow, easy on the eyes, March 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Purchased this 'Edison' light bulb (exposed filament) for a glass chandelier, replacing a 'white' light bulb. The Edison bulb warms up the room but certainly does not have the coverage of a standard bulb.

It looks great and I don't know why I went so long with a standard bulb. Shipping was fast and item was packed securely. I was worried that the cold weather would affect performance, but I let it get to room temperature before plugging in and it worked great.

I have this installed on a dimmer and when the dimmer is low, I think it looks best. Cheap and easy way to change the style of a room.
