This practical guide to editing is aimed at students of journalism and mass communication. It includes examples from various print media, preparing students for jobs on newspapers, magazines and newsletters, and in advertising and public relations. Workbook exercises are included for each chapter, and there are also end-of-chapter "Grammar School" sections covering spelling, sentences, phrases, clauses and punctuation. Topics covered include ethical issues, legal issues, sensitivity and taste; and "Editor's Corner" sections introduce students to an editor in the communications field, who discusses how the topic in question is important in his or her work. Visual examples are provided throughout the text, including photographs, cartoons, and pages from actual newspapers, magazines and newsletters.

2.0 out of 5 stars Clear communication? Give me a break!, August 25, 2003

(REAL NAME)
As a fifth-year journalism student, I would expect to find a certain degree of professionalism in this book. However, after having taken a course which used this book, I was rather disappointed with the book's content. Instead of presenting the subject matter in a clear and concise manner, the author instead attempts to impress readers with his use of "cutesy" words and expressions. The author appears to be trying to have fun, but he only creates more of a chore for his readers by taking this approach. If you want to learn how to edit professionally, I'd recommend finding another book. In fact, see _Contemporary Editing_ by Friend, Challenger and McAdams, which also has a very helpful and user-friendly workbook.

This review is from: Editing for Clear Communication (Spiral-bound)
As a student who has used Editing for Clear Communication, I found the text invaluable in learning to become an editor for publication. Very few editing manuals are able to include so many of the challenges that meet editors of newpspapers and magazines regularly. Editing for Clear Communication brings together both actual and theoretical situations that can either haunt or glorify a publication. And the drills...so challenging that the author himself...
