Learn and Master Piano with Will Barrow, Home School Edition from Legacy Learning Systems, 14 DVDs, 5 Play-Along CDs, 100+ Page Lesson Book, 68 Page Teacher's Guide, 1 DVD Teacher's ResourceMultimedia DVD– January 1, 2008
The title of this product is learn and MASTER piano. Mastery would indicate reaching the highest skill level. But that is not what this dvd course provides. Instead, it gives the student some basic information on how chords are formed, how to count beats, locating minor keys, etc. My biggest disappointment is that there is NO instruction on music reading. The instructor (Will Barrows) acknowledges that the student can do that on his own. Umm, isn't that what most of us want to learn and master? How to sit down to a piece of music to READ and play it?
Another bone to pick is that Will Barrows indicates that he is a Christian in his welcome letter and yet some of his music choices are far from Christian - particularly a Beatles tune and riff he teaches in lesson 14 which references Hotel California. There are SO many other nice songs that could have been used to obtain neutrality. But since I am a Christian and utilizing this "homeschool" course for my kids, I find the music choices very unfavorable. But I discovered these things too late to get my money back.
On the positive side, the background visuals are kind of nice and the camera angles are helpful, with some video tricks to highlight certain keys, chords and so forth. And the instructor is pleasant enough, easy to listen to and what he does teach, he at least teaches it clearly. My kids are playing music, but not reading it. I bought the course because I wanted them to learn and MASTER the piano. And in my book, mastery comes with actual music reading ability.
