5.0 out of 5 stars A great software for kids to learn grammar rules, January 11, 2008

This review is from: Editor in Chief: Level A1, Grades 4-5 (CD-ROM)
My kids got very frustrated first when they started to play this game. They usually know what is wrong and how to correct the mistakes but they could not name the rules. I am so glad I got the software instead of the book. They would not be interested in another workbook. But this game kept them interested.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging grammar work, July 27, 2011
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Editor in Chief: Level A1, Grades 4-5 (CD-ROM)
The Editor in Chief A1 software is based on the workbook of the same name. Each lesson includes a short newspaper-style article, and it's up to the player to locate and identify all the grammatical errors the article contains. Unlike the workbook, in which one must identify only where errors are present and how to solve them, the software adds an extra step: You must actually identify precisely what the error is by choosing a description of the flaw from a wide variety of specific categories within the arenas of punctuation, sentence structure, grammar, parts of speech, and the like. (i.e., is the problem that the wrong verb tense was used? Was it an incomplete sentence? Was such-and-such punctuation/word used in the wrong place? Was there an excess of commas or too few? and many other specific descriptions.)

It can be frustrating when you know where an error is, but can't figure out what specific category to place it in. Some kids will take in in stride, but others are prone to get quite annoyed. If this is the case, you may want to look at the lesson with your child and help them through the process of categorizing the error.

When you finish a lesson, you can play a spelling game where you shoot words with a pencil. Not exactly insanely fun, but a refreshing break, and it's nice that it's still semi-educational.

Overall, if you're teaching grammar for approximately Grades 4-5, Editor in Chief A1 is a good choice. It's challenging, more engaging than a workbook, but definitely a strictly educational program; not swamped with fun, games and animation, but nonetheless pleasant to use.
