Editorial Reviews

Review
Laura Winterroth and William Buckley's splendid book urges us to be commanding, compelling, and polished in our writing; they fulfill their own advice admirably in this handy guide that will help everyone from memo-writers to memoir-writers. --Chris Lowney, author of Heroic Leadership

Nervy, funny, and relentlessly to the point, Editor's Secrets starts by telling you how to organize your thoughts before you write. Then it shows how to build sentences and paragraphs without fluff or wasted words. Your writing will become stronger, more persuasive, and even fun to read. --Duncan Maxwell Anderson, President, High Tor Media, Inc.

When I created the For DummiesTM series of self-help books, I wanted to target intelligent people who'd been made to feel dumb about some everyday matter - computers, wine, golf, finance, whatever - and show them that, with help and direction, they could become smart about anything. Editor's Secrets pursues a similar goal for people who need to write. Read it, and you'll feel like a writing dummy no more. Laura and Bill reveal their secret formula for better writing and editing in a simple, direct, and instructive manner. The presentation, the tips and hints, and the overall tone are nurturing and reassuring. Count on this book to deliver writing results fast! --John Kilcullen, founder of the For DummiesTM brand of books

5.0 out of 5 stars Editor's Secrets: the right book for writing, March 5, 2008
Wow! This little book is just what I was hoping for: Short, sweet, and to the point of improving my writing.

"Editor's Secrets" lays out 10 fundamental issues (it calls them "Keys") for me to understand and put into my writing. And it is very direct. The book tells me, "If you want to accomplish A, then do B."

There's a complete absence of theorizing on grammar or principles of composition. Instead, the book concentrates on "the process" of writing, with many useful examples throughout that show the wrong and right ways to go about putting my thoughts onto paper. It also has a number of practical exercises that encourage learning-by-doing.

If you're looking for a fast, no-frills approach to writing better, "Editor's Secrets" is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on target, March 4, 2008
I think "Editor's Secrets" is great. I plan to use it with my son as he prepares to take the SATs, which now include an essay part.

The authors got it exactly right, from my point of view, with these ten keys to stronger writing. The first key is "Be organized." I've been an editor for over 20 years, and most of the material I need to edit or rewrite is material that was not organized at all.

I also found the exercise of changing from the passive voice to the active voice very valuable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Development Professional's Greatest Asset, March 10, 2008
As the chief development officer of a major non-profit organization, writing effectively is essential to the success of the mission.

Whether it's a two-page "grabber" for an annual fund raising appeal or a carefully crafted and compelling foundation grant proposal, "Editor's Secrets" is the best thing I've found in twenty years to refine, polish and get your point across with brevity and punch. With the wealth of insight it provides at such an affordable price, it should be a required addition to any non-profit executive and development professional's library.

I'm giving "Editor's Secrets" to fund raising friends this coming Christmas. They'll be thanking me for years.
