I assumed that I knew a lot about Music Theory from my playing and reading music composition books. However, Edly's brought all that I learned together in a much more organized way. I actually understand how suspended 4ths etc fit with the rest of the chords now as well as the other combinations within an octave.
I am classical and concert band player so I found all of the chords after the 9th to be overwhelming and unimportant for me. But, its there if you want to know it. In summary its easy to understand as it builds from the simple to complex, but has a ton of information as well.

While I haven't delved into many music theory books, I found this one to be incredibly helpful while studying music on my own in high school. I purchased the latest edition so I could teach my nephew how to read and understand music. While this book was supplemental to my taking piano and guitar lessons growing up, I feel that it should be required reading for any music student.
Great book: easy to understand because the theory of music is broken down into simple parts. The easy relaxed tone of voice is helpful too.

I started playing the violin a few months ago and knew nothing about music theory. My instructor recommended this book and it's very helpful and easy to understand. Overall, this is a great resource for beginners and I think that you will be able to learn from this book.

I used this book as a supplement to my Theory I course in college and it was invaluable! The best part of this text is the many examples you work through yourself and the answer key is right there so you know if you're understanding the concepts. Highly recommend.
I wish this author had a second book on harmony and chord progressions.

If I stop and think about it, I can tell you what the root of a chord is, and which other chords go with it. I was hoping to go from there.
Au contaire, putting cutesy little drawings on the page that have nothing to do with what is being taught doesn't make the subject any easier. I stumbled through half the book and gave up. I don't know that there is an "easy" way to learn theory.

Best Book on Music Theory That I Know Of,
This review is from: Edly's Music Theory For Practical People - Third Edition (Paperback)
I am an adult piano student. I started taking lessons three years ago, never having played an instrument before, and not knowing how to read music and not knowing nothing about music theory. Music had always been important to me, but as I began to learn to play the piano, I found that even songs I had heard a thousand times before sounded new to me, as I was able to hear things I hadn't noticed before. This experience drove me to want to learn as much as I could about music theory. Learning to play an instrument is not really the same as learning about theory. Some students just want to be able to play songs that they like. That is perfectly fine, but that wasn't enough for me. I wanted to understand why a composer chose a certain note, what it meant for music to be written in a certain "key", what a "chord progression" was ..... I have bought several books on theory over the past few years, and have learned something from all of them, but this book is far and away the best. The tone is light hearted, but the information is rock solid. Edly knows what he is talking about, and he convey's his information very well. The book is obviously a labor of love. Pick it up. Read it. Pick is up again. Read it again. Repeat.

This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn music theory or improve their existing knowledge base. The material is extensive but presented in a format that is easy to understand for the beginner as well as the advanced musician. It leaves no questions unanswered. I highly recommend this book.

This book is excellent. It presents theory in a way that is easily understood. Most theory books are so confusing and poorly written, this book is not one of them.
