I bought this for my wife's cross-stitching projects, as she had been using a small hoop frame. The frame assembles easily and without any tools; the parts are joined together by bolts with hand-tightened wing-nuts. Getting the fabric into the slotted bars (the long sides of the frames) is a bit of a challenge and is easier with two people, but still it can be done by one person. You are buying it to hold the fabric, and it will hold it very well once it's in the slotted bars.
Once assembled, the frame works well. It does provide a large working area, up to 8.5"x24" as advertised, and you can easily loosen the wingnuts on one end to roll the fabric to continue working on a different part of the fabric (that is, you can create items that are 24" wide and virtually any length over 8.5" by rolling up the fabric around one bar like a scroll). Considering the light touch used to work the needle in and out of the fabric, the feet are stable enough to keep the frame standing even if you need to rotate the frame to access the underside of the fabric. My wife enjoys it, sitting on the floor and working her patterns. It can be used as well in a chair, with the legs sitting inside or on top of the chair arms. Similarly, it is very easy to remove the legs and use only the frame portion for a more mobile application. We would not hesitate to recommend it to any cross-stitchers tired of using the small hoop frames. This large frame prevents the difficult creases you get if you don't take your fabric out of the hoop after every session; leave the fabric in this frame and it'll still look sharp day after day.

I didn't even know they made such a thing as this anymore. It is absolutely the greatest little invention ever. It holds my needlepoint project perfectly while I sit and talk or watch TV. It comes in pieces and I'm not very mechanical, so someone else put it together for me. I would highly recommend this little stand to anyone who can't stand to just sit idly, doing nothing.

An easy, inexpensive option.,

You can certainly spend a lot on fancy needlework stands, but with this it's just not necessary. Easy to use, lightwieght, and if you keep the side bolts loose you can flip the work up easily to see the back of your piece. I think this is great for someone who likes portable hands free crafting without spending a fortune to hold the work.

Split wood dowel fabric holder design is not able to hold the fabric tight --> loose at the center.

I used this product more than 20 years ago, and paid a small fortune for it. I'm so excited that I have this adjustable stand, whatsmore, it cost a fraction of what I paid for it in the 1980's. It makes working on my project that much easier and more relaxing. I recommend that everyone who works on needlepoint, crewel, bargello, etc. have this itme on hand, to simplify their lives.

This item is a great product for those projects which can fit into the space allotted. It was too small for my particular project but that was easily remedied with the help of a few clips. But for my future smaller projects (my current on is a bit ambitious) the size of this product is ideal. The screws come loose when I turn and tilt the frame too much, but that is to be expected with anything involved screws that are not to be permanently secured.
Now, the only problem I had with this product was the shipping price. I bought this online thinking that I would have to pay around the same $30 at my local craft store. However, upon visiting said craft store I discovered that it stocked and sold scroll frames for around $12. I cannot vouch for the quality of the less expensive item, but I certainly would have considered it. But as I have already bought it and used it, I can say I am very satisfied and would purchase again if shipping rates were lowered.

Just received this item a few days ago and got to use it already. Love it, love it, love it!
Makes your hands totally free, just simply poke down with one hand and poke back up with the other. Very happy with this product!

Just What I Needed...,

I've been using a scroll lap bar for years, but the one I had needed replaced since the screws had started to rust. This was a great price, and I liked that the scroll attached to the legs in the middle of the frame, not by the bottom scroll bar as my last one did (this meant any time you adjusted the angle of your work, it would effect the tautness of the fabric. Not so with this frame).
This a very sturdy frame, and I haven't had any major problems with the fabric becoming loose. Obviously if you're working on either the very top or the very bottom of a piece, there's less fabric in one scroll, so the fabric does become looser faster, but this isn't the fault of the frame, there's just not enough fabric rolled in the scroll at one end to keep it super tight. I definitely recommend this for larger works. I went to Michael's and bought some shorter bars to use with this stand for pieces that are a bit smaller...worked out great. I'm definitely pleased with this purchase.

This is awesome, although I don't think it would hold something more then 22" wide.

This is a great solution for people who don't like to move their hoop around as you progress through your project. The stand holds my cross stitch very tight and I can center the area I am working on by simply rotating the upper and lower dowels. I especially like that this doubles as a lap stand so I don't have to hold my hoop for so long that my arm starts getting cramped.
