Bios of the vanishing Edo Craftsmen,

The author takes a look at the last living practitioners of the primary artforms of old Japan, woodcarving,woodblock printing, metal smithing, temple building, etc.He spent a few days with each of his subjects and tried to really get a feel for how each "shokunin" did his job. I was fascinated with the stories of how they learned their crafts and the techniques involved in them, and the photographs were wonderful. I was left wishing for more, though. The vignettes on each craftmen were - of necessity I guess - short and I had so many more questions I wanted answered about each of their respective crafts. But a wonderful read, all the same.
