The novel about BOPE, the Special Operations of Rio de Janeiro's Police, July 27, 2007
This review is from: Elite da Tropa (Paperback)
This novel is one of the finest of the current literature in Brazil. Written by three men that have lived in all possible ways everything that happens in the public security matters in Rio de Janeiro. Two of them, were policemen, and served in the BOPE (Special Operations Battalion), the elite unit of police, recognized by US and Israel as the most efficient, the best unit in urban combat in the world today, so that is true that these countries send some of their army and police to training exercises with it. Alongside this two policemen, it was also written by a former Security secretary of the brazilian government. This way, the book goes by the heavy gun-fight and combat incursions in the Favelas, (the slums) (as the writing policemen have actualy done it), to the inside of the politics and private interests that rules the game from the top to the bottom. Unfortunately only in portuguese, this is one of master piece book, and for those that may be able to read it, it is a must-have, specially to understand how is the reality of public security in Rio.

Elite Squad, November 1, 2007
This review is from: Elite da Tropa (Paperback)
YC, summarized very well.
This is a great book that gives an insight of what really happens in the Rio de Janeiro Police. We, the natives, know by either seeing for ourselves and hear about it in the 8 O'clock news everyday. It took 2 honest policemen and a former Secretary to write a book and make people aware to what it is. Again, the BOPE is a different police and this book shows how the different polices (Civilian and Military) in Rio de Janeiro work. The good side of the proud BOPE members and the rotten side of the others who corrupt themselves by being complacent with the crime and sometimes contributing to it. Great Book!
