Excellent quality and timing of delivery. This is a revolutionary approach to the "way we always teach." Evidence based and outstanding suggestions are in every chapter. Benner does it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important to Read, May 22, 2010

This review is from: Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation (Jossey-Bass/Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching) (Hardcover)
As a nurse and educator, I am finding this book validating and filled with insights. Many educators today, like me, were educated when the healthcare environment was simpler and nursing care was less complex. Today's needs are much different as are the students. "Educating Nurses" defines the need for change as well as the change needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Catalyst and Guide With the Potential to Transform Modern Day Nursing Education, September 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation (Jossey-Bass/Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching) (Hardcover)
Educating nurses: A call for radical transformation (Benner,Sutphen,Leonard,& Day, 2010) is not just another book about what needs to be changed in nursing education curriculums. It is not simply a descriptive summary of the findings from a multi-site study of nine different nursing programs across the country. The scholarly work presented in this book is a collection of what nurses really are, do, and need to be. The authors discuss the issues most urgent for nursing and nursing education today, including: prerequisite courses for entry into nursing schools; licensing and minimum degree requirements; descriptions of best practices in nursing instruction; the need for workforce diversity; and a description of the multi-faceted knowledge base and skills required to provide comprehensive nursing care, are but some of them.

It is my opinion that this book has great potential to serve as a catalyst and guide for the implementation of transformational changes in professional nursing education. The book accurately depicts shortcomings and problems present in modern day nursing education. By utilizing theory and clinical knowledge, followed by the identification of those needs most relevant and urgent, it reflects the sense of salience referred to throughout its pages. This scholarly work is not merely a comprehensive assessment of modern day nursing education programs. True to the professional expectations of nurses, the authors effectively share what needs are not only identified, but those that are anticipated and most urgent; while also providing viable solutions to the issues identified. The question remaining is: will nursing leadership will merely note the assessment results, or make the time to take that action which is in the best interest of our patients and colleagues?
This book is a must read for all present and future nurses!

Pat Benner and her colleagues have brought to the forefront the many issues and challenges of our current nursing education system. They haven't stopped there though. They have also provided a blueprint for changes that need to be considered and implemented if we are to continue graduating qualified nursing candidates. This book should be required reading for all nursing educators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nursing Education: A call for Radical Transformation, November 10, 2010
This review is from: Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation (Jossey-Bass/Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching) (Hardcover)
A great book! will be another timeless classic on every Nurse Educators shelf. It is not a light read; It initiates the conversations in Nursing Education that need to be address and calls us to rethink the way we are teaching. It reminds us that we have much work to do in terms of Nursing Education Research. The paradigm cases are phenomenal. Unfolding cases by Dr. Lisa Day is also exceptional. I bought this direct from the publisher last fall before it hit the Book Retailers at full price because I could not wait.
