Editorial Reviews

Product Description

New from the editor of the pioneering EDUCATION OF . . . series, this benchmark collection of fifty essays and interviews provides students and working designers with a firm understanding of the pitfalls and triumphs awaiting the design entrepreneur. Designers recount their motives for setting out on their own and reflect on the degree to which their creative spirit has been satisfied by entrepreneurial freedom–in areas ranging from book, Web site, and home product design to golf course development and entertainment design. Contributors such as Byron Glaser and Sandra Higashi, Eric Zimmerman, Rudy VanderLans, and others reveal that entrepreneurship is not simply a designer's ticket to liberation–it can also be a labyrinth of clerical tasks and manufacturing nightmares. This collection provides candid anecdotes and no-frills advice for any designer ready to brave the trials and rewards of entrepreneurship.

From the Publisher

Pursuing Creative and Monetary Freedom / Fascinating Document of Design Entrepreneurialism Sheds Light on a New Trend

Design entrepreneurs are on the rise. Spurred by new internet and design technologies, thousands have turned from mere designers into managers of their own enterprises. Some publish their own books and magazines, others design, manufacture, and distribute their own products. In THE EDUCATION OF A DESIGN ENTREPRENEUR, designer and "authorpreneur" Steven Heller meets some of the most interesting members of this restless group to talk about the fascinating quest for creative and monetary freedom.

THE EDUCATION OF A DESIGN ENTREPRENEUR is one of the first books to cover this recent trend among designers. Written by one of the most articulate advocates of design entrepreneurialism, this captivating chronicle of a new professional paradigm brings together the voices of over forty known and less-known designers who have created, marketed, (and sometimes hand-manufactured!) their own products. In candid essays and interviews, they recount their motives for becoming entrepreneurs, the psychological and practical obstacles they had to overcome on the way, and the impact of this move on their creative egos.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be more useful and inspiring, August 29, 2007
This is a book that has more potential than it realised. Reading it I found it a bit light weight and short on usefulness. Well written.
