`Tilak's book is a worthwhile contribution to the literature. It makes good use of a wide range of... materials to represent recent research findings on its chosen themes, and should particularly be welcomed by teachers and students of comparative education' - International Journal of Educational Development
`It is the selectiveness of topics which makes this book clear and concise and as such, a useful source of reference.... This book is one which will be of great interest to development experts in search of empirical evidence of how education impacts on development in Asia and for those seeking comparative benchmakrs on which to assess education investments elsewhere in the developing world' - Journal of Far Eastern Business
`To incorporate the development of this half of the world into a single volume of only 187 pages of narrative text represents an enormous achievement which Profesor Tilak has accomplished with great distinction.... Professor Tilak's book is very successful in terms of its coverage and its concentration. It has the advantage, too, of being written by an Asian, avoiding therefore the distractions of unnecessary comparisons with situations in other continents. It is a huge contribution to the literature on education in development for which all its readers will be very grateful' - Journal of Educational Administration and History

A lot of statistical work... but few explanations,

This review is from: Education for Development in Asia (Hardcover)
There is a lot of evidence about the importance of education. What is missing, however, is a good chapter explaining the policies adopted by the successful countries to improve their education level. It would have been better, also, if the author would focus on the economic miracle cases (e.g., the East Asian economies and not in almost all Asian countries. For a larger book the entire Asian experience would have been good, but for just 187 pages of text, it ends quite superficial.
