This review is from: Education and Examination in Modern Japan (Hardcover)
In this book, Amano covers the foundation of the modern Japanese education system. By modern he means the system created when Japan was opened to the west in the 19th century, not the education system as it exists today. It's fascinating to see how the entire system was created during this period of turmoil. While not all of the innovations of this period have lasted to this day, many features have. Amano gives particular attention to the creation of the system of entrance exams, which have cause lots of stress for Japanese students until this day. If you're interested in reading about the history of the creation of this system, this book will provide you with the information you need.
