This review is from: The Education of Historians for Twenty-first Century (Paperback)
this is an interesting read. it's probably only about 150 pages if you remove the appendices from the pg. ct. the vast majority of the appendices is the text of the survey the authors sent to universities in order to gather the data in the book.
i bought this book to help me consider whether or not it is wise to pursue a Ph.D. many of the AHA's observations were relevant (teaching requirements are too demanding and prolong the time it takes to earn a degree); some are not (there are an increasing number of women Ph.D's and "minority" subject matter). all and all, i'm glad i read this. just one concise disclaimer: this book is an outline of the AHA's impressions of graduate programs and its proposals on how to improve graduate programs; this isn't necessarily for potential students. however, it does inform potential students of relevant discourses. |
