Editorial Reviews

Review

The renewed interest in Carter G. Woodson's minor masterpiece, The Mis-Education of the Negro, has led to interest in his other writings of this subject. His book The Education of the Negro should be read in relationship to understanding his more known book on the subject, The Mis-Education of the Negro. --Dr. John Henrik Clarke --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ending African-American dependence on white America, June 15, 2004
By
torrid_wind™ (Brooklyn, NY, United States) - See all my reviews
Carter G. Woodson's constructive critique of the how the education system in America plays a pivotal role in ensuring African-Americans' dependence on white America. This is not book of protest. In fact, Mr. Woodson proposes that, "One should rely upon protest only when it is supported by a constructive program". The writing here is clear, concise and compelling. I often don't finish reading books. This one was very difficult to put down. This book is a MUST READ for all African-Americans. You didn't hear me...READ THIS BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Education Negro, March 12, 2007

Anything Woodson writes is a winner. I have enjoyed his other books as well. He can be highly controversial at time which lends such extrordinary flavor to his books. Enjoyed it and recommend it to all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just To Clear A Couple Of Things Up, December 11, 2010

I haven't finished reading this yet so any review would be incomplete, but in an effort to save others some time, here's what I've found. Yes, there are indeed two separate books; The Education of The Negro Prior to 1861; and The Mis-education of The Negro. They represent only a portion of this man's research into the effects of education on racial development.

From Wikipedia: "Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875 - April 3, 1950) was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was one of the first scholars to value and study Black History. He recognized and acted upon the importance of a people having an awareness and knowledge of their contributions to humanity, and left behind an impressive legacy. A founder of Journal of Negro History, Dr. Woodson is known as the Father of Black History."
