Amazon.com Review

Blurt is a hilarious, fast-paced game of rapid recall that will have both kids and adults scrambling to be the first to shout out a word based on a given definition. In the heat of the race to call out the right word, even bookworms with big vocabularies may find themselves tongue-tied. With a Junior Version that gives kids as young as seven years old a chance to learn new words, Blurt is both educational and fun for groups of three to 12 players.

What We Think

Fun factor:

Ease of assembly:
Educational factor:
Novelty factor:

The Good: Fast-paced word recall game teaches kids vocabulary while having fun.

The Challenging: Adults-only groups may want to skip unchallenging clues.

In a Nutshell: Fun vocabulary testing game with 1800 clues and many advanced-play options.

This tongue-twisting game will have players racking their brains for words.
Be the First to Blurt the Right Word
An updated version of the original classic, Blurt features a new look but is a cinch to learn. With a total of 1800 different clues of varying difficulty, the fun never ends! A roll of the die determines which clue is read as well as the amount that a correct guess will be worth. As soon as the clue is read aloud, get ready for the room to erupt with rapid-fire guesses!

There's no penalty for blurting our wrong answers, so things can get crazy in a hurry. Whoever guesses the correct answer first gets to move his or her token forward. The first player to make a complete circle around the colorful jumbo game board wins!

Get the Whole Family Laughing
One of the best features of Blurt is its all-inclusive game play. While some of the clues such as "the decision made at the end of a trial" will seem obvious to adults, over-confident guessers may find themselves bested by a quick-witted youngster half their age. And for those clues that seem too tough for a seven-year-old, the flip side of each card offers easier clues designed specifically for kids.

Junior Version Builds Vocabulary
Groups of kids ages seven to nine will love playing the Junior Version of Blurt (additional instructions included). In this version, players write down their guesses rather than blurting them. Every clue offers the opportunity to learn a new vocabulary word, and extra points are awarded for correct spelling!

Raise the Stakes with Advanced Play Options
The instruction manual includes a number of variations on the standard rules of game play that can level the playing field or raise the stakes. For added excitement, players can stipulate that whomever lands on a square that matches the color of his or her own game piece can challenge another player to a one-on-one showdown.

Alternatively, a variation called "Name that Word" allows players to bid on the number of words in which they think they can identify the correct answer. In this way, a fairly easy clue can become extremely difficult. With a total of 1800 clues and many different ways to play, Blurt is sure to become an old standby for large parties or family game nights.

What's in the Box
Blurt jumbo game board, 300 cards with 1800 clues at two playing levels, six game pieces, and die.

With 1,800 clues, the game will be sure to boost and develop vocabulary.

Blurt The Webster's Game of Word Racing

Think fast. What word means a partially dried grape? Be the first player to say raisin and you're on your way to winning this riotous game of rapid word recall. Players take turns reading clues aloud, competing to blurt the correct answer first and move ahead on the board. The first person or team to circle the board is the winner. Sounds simple, right? But as the race for the right word heats up and the blurting gets boisterous, it's easy to get tongue-tied.

Blurt is a great vocabulary builder for the kids, a hilarious addition to adult parties and a must for a family game night. It's for 3 to 12 players and includes a Junior version for ages 7 to 9.

  • Product Dimensions: 10.5 (L) x 3 (W) x 10.5 (H)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as "uproarious" as I was expecting, April 9, 2011

Blurt is another one of those word games worthy of adding to your board game collection. Players of ages 7 and up will be able to understand the rules very quickly. Someone rolls the dice, a person reads the corresponding definition for the number rolled, and the other players try to "blurt" the correct vocabulary word. Yes, it will build children's vocabularies. Yes, it is educational and occasionally funny. The game usually isn't too long or too short, and it's easy to adjust the rules to your preference if that's what you want.

I still wouldn't say it's my favorite word game. For one thing, the box makes it seem like players will be shouting out any words they can think of, but in practice, that's not what always happened in our group. Often, no one blurted anything until they could think of a very reasonable answer. This made playing the game a little boring. Another problem is that some definitions are harder for younger kids. It's true that all the cards have a "junior level" side with easier vocabulary words, but if you are playing with people of a wide range of ages, the older and more educated ones will more likely figure out the word before the younger kids.

Sorry if my review sounds too critical, but I just wanted to be as helpful as possible. Overall I still think this is a great game, and I don't regret owning it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blurt fans from way back, July 5, 2009

We were big fans of Blurt back in 1994 when it first came out. It was a regular addition to sociable (okay, sometimes fiercely competitive) game nights with family and friends. We loved the game so much; we even had the travel version!

So, we were thrilled to find it available again and, happily, updated with new words and clues! The rules are simple. Players take turns reading the definition of the word on the card. They then proceed to blurt out the word being defined. Sounds easy, right? Yes and no! Many of the words have multiple answers, and you've got to be both fast and right to advance on the game board. PLUS, you may be way ahead of your competition and then be taken down by a trailing challenger through several allowed, head-to-head challenge rules.

There are two levels of clues and a junior version of the game for kids 7 to 9 included. Everyone competes to blurt the right answer, so there's no waiting for your turn, making this fast-paced game perfect for families and word nerds of all ages.

I sent my daughter, grown and on her own now, a Blurt game. She plays Scrabble on line with her friends and makes her living as a word nerd. She's added it to the collection of games they enjoy with a bottle of wine and some fondue. Looks like lots of great things are back in style!

5.0 out of 5 stars Silliness, August 22, 2009
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Educational Insights Blurt! The Uproarious Word Race Game! (Toy)
There isn't any other game that I'd rather play. Wow, I realize that's a lot to live up to. The thing about Blurt is that you can go with all of the add-on directions or you can just stick to the heart of the game... read a clue and be the first to blurt out the word being described. Sounds easier than it is, but it truly is good exercise for your mind. Now if you're playing with a bunch of friends your age it can be all kinds of competitive silliness. What's so crazy is that it really can be fun for all ages... just like the box says, and that doesn't happen with just any board game. When I got my game, my 3½-year-old was so curious that my husband and I sat down and read a few definitions to him. Even he could come up with the answers for words like kitchen, shampoo, kitten, whisper, nap... so it was good practice and he learned a few new words along the way. So it's educational too? You bet it is. You couldn't ask for a better gift idea. Lastly, my number one favorite thing about the game... it's the name. Say it out loud... Blurt, Blurt, Blurt. Enough said. You should hear my little boy say it. Ah, it never gets old.
